Czech Republic-based defender Costa Nhamoinesu is on the verge of writing his own piece of history by becoming the second Zimbabwean to win a European league title.
Last night, the Sparta Prague defender was just three points away from winning the Czech Gambrinus Liga needed from four matches.
Sparta Prague are leading the Gambrunus Liga by 10 points with four games to go.
After Bruce Grobbelaar won six English Premier League titles with Liverpool, Nhamoinesu is on course to emulate the Warriors legend and play in the Uefa Champions League next season.
To cap a fine term, the left-back is in the running for the Gambrinus player of the season title.
“Winning the league title would be a massive feeling. I can already feel it,” said Nhamoinesu.
“It feels good to be on top because of hard work. I have learnt to absorb the pressure over the years.”
Nhamoinesu is however nursing a shoulder injury and is expected to be back in action next weekend.
He however travelled to Teplice with the rest of the team although he could not play.
“As a footballer I always want to play but as a professional, I also understand that being injured is part of the game. I have been doing rehab for the past week and already working with the ball,” he said.
The 28-year-old is also chasing the Czech Cup and could end the season with a double.
Sparta Prague beat Jablonec on Wednesday to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the Czech Cup and set a date with Viktoria Plzen in the final.
“The final against Plzen will be a tough game. It could be interesting.”
Ironically, the final will be played on May 17, the same weekend the Warriors would be in Tanzania for an Afcon qualifier.
