Zimbabwe set for elections this year.

Addressing a press conference in Harare today, Zimbabwe Opposition Political Parties Council (ZOPPC), Secretary Dr Gadzamoyo Dewah and President of the Rebuilding Party of Zimbabwe, Everisto Chikanga said uncertainty with regards to the future stability of the nation was a major concern in Zimbabwe.

“ZOPPC would like to see the Zimbabwe political environment opened for us to participate in it as well. If it does not happen before the coming election, we will certainly deem it not a free, fair and credible election.

“We are saying an election dominated by these two political parties is not going to change our nation for the better, but rather, may plunge our nation into deeper problems.”

They said that they are going to object to an election only dominated by ZANU PF and MDC and its formations because they are deprived of their right to participate. ZOPPC said they are pessimistic about the outcome of such an election.

“We foresee and foretell immediate problems befalling our nation should the coming harmonized elections dominantly be contested between by these dominant opposing each other blocks of political power in our land.”

Chikanga said if ZANU PF wins the MDC and its formations are not going to accept the results and if MDC wins ZANU PF will not hand over power leading to a second GNU.

“As political parties outside of the GPA, we are very concerned about the stagnation or the declining of our economy, concerned about the political disharmony that has caused so much violence and loss of life, concerned about lack of development,

“Concerned about the uncertainty with regards to the future stability of our nation, concerned about rampant corruption, concerned about a healthcare delivery system that is failing so many lives….” said Chikanga.

They went on to say that the origin of the problems facing Zimbabwe was the political disharmony between the two major political parties’ active in Zimbabwe, namely ZANU PF and MDC and its formations.

Chikanga added that the consequence of this political disharmony is the unspeakable suffering of the majority of the people. He added that there is lack of unity of purpose and pursuit of a common vision for the greatest common good of Zimbabwe.

ZOPPC went on to say they are likely going to boycott the elections, as they have already wrote to the executive and judiciary for the extension of the election dates.
