MDC-T to embark on ‘Baby Shower’ rallies

HARARE – The MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says it will embark on what it calls ‘Baby Shower’ rallies countrywide that will ‘celebrate the new Zimbabwe that is coming’ should the party win upcoming general elections.

The first of these rallies was at the Harare showgrounds over the weekend.

Speaking to Nehanda Radio on Monday, party National Organising Secretary Nelson Chamisa said they would also embark on ‘door to door’ campaigns in the urban areas and ‘village to village’ recruitment drives in the rural areas.

Chamisa said they were engaging in ‘scientific organising’ in which they would also be targeting ‘virgin voters’ who could be key in the election.

The party has also launched what it calls a ‘New Zimbabwe Unemployment Form’ in which they are taking down the names of all those who are unemployed or have been retrenched and want to get back in employment.

Those filling in the forms indicate the sector they want to work in and their qualifications. Chamisa who is the ICT Minister in the coalition government said the form, proving popular amongst the youths, will be used by his party to develop a skills and manpower database.

Meanwhile Chamisa said preparations for party primary elections were at an advanced stage with its ‘electoral colleges’ now in place. “We are now availing the voters’ roll to approved contestants,” he told Nehanda Radio.

Radio presenters Ezra ‘Tshisa’ Sibanda, Eric Knight and veteran journalist Geoff Nyarota were last week cleared to stand in the primary elections while over 200 aspiring candidates were disqualified by the party after failing to meet the criteria set out.
