Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka was reportedly on life support at the Avenues Clinic after his Toyota Prado vehicle overturned in Domboshava on Sunday while he was visiting his rural home.
MDC-T party spokesman Douglas Mwonzora told journalists “a rear tyre burst and the car overturned. He has suffered head injuries, broken ribs and his lung was also affected. But we hope he will be fine.”
Several reports say the vehicle rolled three times before landing on its roof, leaving Tamborinyoka seriously injured and his five brothers who were in the car with minor injuries. The vehicle had been removed from the scene by 11am.
A senior MDC-T official told Nehanda Radio “Luke is in a very difficult position right now. The head injuries are very serious. We are praying for him as we speak. He lost a lot of blood and it’s not looking good.”
Kudakwashe Matibiri, a close family friend, said: “He had branched off from the main road to his home when the rear tyre of the Toyota Prado he was driving burst and he lost control of the vehicle. He is still unconscious and has broken ribs. One of the broken ribs is said to have disturbed his lung and that is why he is in the ICU.”
Minister of State in the PM’s Office Jameson Timba confirmed the accident. He said Tamborinyoka had suffered broken ribs, a perforated lung and damaged vein on the left arm, among other injuries.
“Luke had an accident last night on his way to his rural home in Domboshava. He is at the Avenues Clinic and is in a critical but stable condition.”
In March 2009, Tsvangirai’s wife Susan died in a car accident after a truck slammed into the right side of their Land Cruiser, causing it to overturn 3 times. The couple were also travelling to their rural home like Tamborinyoka.
