BULAWAYO – Suspected state agents yesterday forced the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) to cancel the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Memorial Lecture which was due to be co-hosted by the Daily News.

Vice President John Nkomo, Environment minister Francis Nhema and Zapu leader and liberation war supremo Dumiso Dabengwa were expected to attend. The Joshua Nkomo National Foundation (JNNF) is also involved in organising the big discussion together with the Daily News and Nust.
There were frantic efforts last night to organise the lecture at a different venue after the threat targeted at Nust officials. The Daily News officials were by late last night still hopeful that the lecture would go ahead while officials from JNNF were also trying to get an alternative venue after the Nust ban.
Officials from both Nust and the (JNNF) were yesterday evening tight-lipped on who from the state had forced the last-minute cancellation of the event at Nust.
Nkosana Moyo, executive director of the Mandela Institute of Development Studies, is the guest of honour while historian and academic Sabelo Gatsheni Ndlovu and Joshua Nyoni, an agricultural economist and consultant, will be discussants.
The topic under discussion is “Back to the Future.” The late Nkomo’s book The Story of My Life is due to be re-launched during the event. Nkomo, affectionately known as Father Zimbabwe or Umdala Wethu, died on July 1, 1999. The Story of My Life will be sold at the Daily News offices in Harare starting tomorrow. Daily News
