Blackburn striker Benjani Mwaruwari is the highest paid sports star from Zimbabwe according to ESPN, a United States sports magazine. His annual salary was put at a staggering US$3,405,584.00 (£2,065,611.32 or R22,603,110.71).
The former Zimbabwe captain who has also played for Auxerre, Portsmouth and Manchester City earned US$283,798.66 (£172,134.27 or R1,883,592.55) per month last year, or US$70,949.66 (£43,033.56 or R470,898.13) per week.
ESPN Magazine compiled a list of the highest paid sports stars from 182 countries. Football dominates the list with 114 players included, many of whom are based in the UK.
The highest-paid footballer based in the Premier League on the list is Argentina’s Carlos Tevez, who is said to have an annual salary of £11.52m, just below that of Real Madrid’s Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
