ZC appoint ex-SA batting coach Justin Sammons as Chevrons head coach

The Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Wednesday finally announced the appointment of ex-South Africa cricket team batting coach Justin Sammons as the Chevrons’ new head coach.

ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani announced in a statement: “We are delighted to confirm Justin as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team,” he said.

“He brings a wealth of coaching experience and a reputation of identifying, nurturing and developing some of the best young talent in South Africa.

“His hard-working and passionate approach as well as sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward,” Mukuhlani added.

Sammons replaces Dave Houghton who resigned as the Chevrons head coach in 2023 after Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the U.S and West Indies.

Sammons’ first assignment will be the five-match T20 series against India in Harare beginning on the 6th of July.

The South African will be deputised by the Chevrons’ former batter Dion Ebrahim.

Meanwhile, ZC also announced the appointment of the former Chevrons captain Elton Chigumbura as the Under-19 men’s national team head coach.

Chigumbura will be assisted by Rangarirai Norbert Manyande who played first-class cricket in Zimbabwe before he went on to feature for Namibia, while former South Africa star Paul Adams will be the Bowling Coach.
