Chigumbura appointed new cricket captain

Elton Chigumbura has been appointed as Zimbabwe’s new captain after Prosper Utseya handed in his resignation following a meeting with the managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket. Utseya took over the role as a 21-year-old back in 2007, having first made the national side at the age of 19 after the resignation of Zimbabwe’s ‘rebel’ players.

He will continue to be available for selection as Zimbabwe prepare fopr a home tri-series against India and Sri Lanka.

“It has been a privilege for me to captain Zimbabwe for the past four years,” Utseya said in his resignation letter.

“It has been an experience that has been fraught with many emotions, though I am glad to say that, overall, I have enjoyed the experience immensely and would not have wished for it to be otherwise.

“I remain committed to the cause of the team and Zimbabwe Cricket. That commitment is something every international sportsman has. It is more so for those who, like me, have had the honour to lead their national sides.”

A quiet character, Utseya led the team in 67 one-day internationals, of which they won 20. His offspin has improved over the years, and although he has never been a prolific wicket-taker he has always proved economical.

His replacement Chigumbura has emerged as Zimbabwe’s most promising player, and is already the captain of Mashonaland Eagles.

The allrounder’s appointment as captain was a unanimous decision by the ZC Board, and his first match in charge will be against a second-string India side in Bulawayo on May 28.

“I am humbled by the confidence that the cricket committee and the ZC Board has shown in me to select me for this role,” said Chigumbura in a statement to the board. Cricket365.com
