Takura Zhangazha: Political and corporate treason over water in Harare

By Takura Zhangazha

The Harare City Council (HCC) recently announced that it had run out of water treatment chemicals. And with astounding ease also announced that it was therefore going to shut down the city’s largest water treatment plant. That basically meant that it was shutting down the entire council water supply of the city immediately. Just like that, at least 1,4 million residents of Harare would have no access to clean water.

Takura Zhangazha
Takura Zhangazha

The shutdown of the water treatment plant, at least officially, lasted about 24 hours. This, after central government then announced that it was taking over the plant for the city council.

Both central and local government must have had clear knowledge that the capital city was running out of the necessary water treatment equipment. While it was HCC that appeared to let our water situation come to this shutdown, there’s probably no way the ministry of local government was not aware of the same.

So as expected, blame games were thrown around with relative ease. At the same time, and with immediacy, the supply of water for Harare, became politicized. Central government, as run by the national ruling Zanu Pf party was quick to infer that the blame for such a potentially catastrophic state of affairs lay with the opposition MDC Alliance run HCC.

Pundits were also quick to point out the technicalities of how HCC has not been collecting rates because of the lack of payment for a new billing system that had already gone through a tender process. Hence it had no money to pay for the supply of critically important chemicals.

On the other hand, there is also the argument that since bills are now being charged in local ZWL currency, even if they are not being efficiently collected, there is no way HCC can acquire chemicals without foreign currency support from central government.

There is a third but unspoken argument is the one that fits snugly into our assumptions fo economic sophistry. That of not questioning the supplier companies of the chemicals that are required.

Not only in relation to costs but also probably their views on their corporate social responsibilities. All of which includes the fact that because not only water itself but more importantly access to it is a human right, then these companies must be held up to the highest level of public accountability. Together with central government and HCC on the matter.

But we would still need to examine the matter further. From an attitude perspective. And here I am referring to the nature of the attitude of not only our political and business leaders to disregarding the sanctity of human life. But also that of ourselves as ordinary Zimbabweans.

It generally now begins with us as individuals and how we perceive of ourselves together with our role within the collective that we call society. For a majority of us water has become a commodity. Quite literally. It is no longer, in our own individualistic view, a right.

As it would have been in a village setting where it was unfathomable to deny a stranger a cup of water. We no longer see beyond our own individual needs. Hence there is no outcry about the fact that a city council can abruptly announce that it is shutting down water supply. We all think about our boreholes. Or our status via where we live and by inference, our class.

It is altogether awkward but a testimony to the fact that as Zimbabweans we have tragically moved away from what would be an important understanding of collective well-being.

Not it in the abstract sense of ‘ubuntu’ but in the more pragmatic and technical sense of ensuring that whatever happens we are all given a fair chance of well-being in our society.

Through access to basic social services and in this particular instance, access to water as a right. Not a privilege. It is a development that should worry us all that we have sunk so low. And over water and access to it for that matter.

But then again it explains why our elected political leaders behave the way they do. Such as those at HCC who casually announce the shutdown of water supply for the entirety of a city.

Or those in central government who then attempt to be doing a Houdini of restoring supply of an essential natural resource to score the cheapest of political points.

The media also did not help in the matter. In other countries this would have been an issue of epic coverage, down to the minutest detail. The media chose instead to follow the story of a long drawn funeral as well as ratchet up an imaginary tiff between Zimbabwe and the global west at the recent United Nations General Assembly.

It is prudent to recall that we need to change at a fundamental level, our approach and attitude to social services. Both in urban and rural areas.

It remains the primary obligation of the state to ensure that we receive these social services (access to clean water, health, education, transport and housing).

It also remains the primary obligation of all of us to understand that we need to be constantly aware of this fact. And to demand these services.

Not via the profit seeking corporates’ but the state. And to tell HCC or any other urban or rural district council that their job is not as abstract as they assume. It is about human lives.

Condolences for former Highlanders midfielder Charles Chilufya, who died in Zambia on Sunday, continued to trickle in yesterday, with Zifa and Bosso paying their homage.

Chilufya, who set the local football scene alight at the turn of the millennium, helping Highlanders to back-to-back championships, died at University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka and was buried yesterday in his homeland.

In their message, Zifa said: “The Zimbabwe Football Association joins the nation in mourning the passing of legendary former footballers, Hamid “Muzukuru” Dhana and Charles “Chief” Chilufya on 29 September.

“Chilufya played for Premier Soccer League sides Hwange FC, Railstars FC and Highlanders FC and was one of the key players in the Caf Champions League then under Eddie May.

“Together with the likes of Zenzo Moyo, Joel Luphahla, Thabani Masawi, Amon Chimbalanga, Bekithemba Ndlovu and Tapiwa Kapini, they changed the face of the top flight with their never say never spirit.

“Speedy and skillful Dhana played for Dynamos FC, Arcadia, Black Rhinos FC and the national team, forming fearsome combinations with various players.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of former footballers Hamid Dhana and Charles Chilufya who passed on on 29 September 2019.

“It is indeed a sad moment when football loses one of its own, and its worse when we lose two on the same day.

“We convey our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the dearly departed as well as the whole local football family,” said Zifa.

The Premier Soccer League also expressed its condolences to Dhana and Chilufya’s families.

“Sad day for Zim football as we mourn the death of former football stars Hamid Dhana and Charles Chilufya.

Our deepest condolences to the Dhana and Chilufya families, friends and the entire football fraternity.

“May their Souls Rest in Peace,” said PSL.

Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe said they were gutted by Chilufya’s death.

“This is a great loss to the Highlanders family. Chilufya has a special place in the history of the club.

“For a club like ours that has seen former players coming back to coach the club, I think we have been robbed by death.

“Who knows? Maybe he would have came back to coach Highlanders had he lived beyond today.

“I would like to pass my condolences to Zambian football, the Chilufya family and to all Highlanders supporters for this great loss,” said Mhlophe.

Hwange great Weekly Mwale described Chilufya as a “midfield general”.

United Arab Emirates based former Highlanders rightback Noel Kaseke said: “It is with a heavy heart I say Rest In Peace “Chief” an amazing midfielder with an eye for goals. Scored spectacular goals during our time together in the glory years at Bosso.

“A great man, a gentleman and larger than life “mafana mafana” will miss u.

“May God give comfort and peace to your loved ones.” The Chronicle

Mighty Warriors boycott costs Zifa

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has fined Zifa 10 000 Swiss francs for the Mighty Warriors’ failure to fulfil the return leg of the African Women Olympic qualifier against Zambia which was slated for Rufaro on September 1.

The match was also awarded to Shepolopolo on a 3-0 scoreline. According to a statement from Fifa which was carried by an online publication, Goal.com, the fine is to be paid within 30 days from the date of the notification.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee found the Zimbabwe Football Association responsible for the infringement of the relevant provisions of the Regulations for the Olympic Football Tournaments Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 related to withdrawal (art. 7 par. 1) and of the FIFA Disciplinary Code related to unplayed matches and abandonment (art. 14).

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee declares the match of the Women’s Olympic Qualifiers that was scheduled to be played between Zimbabwe and Zambia on 1 September 2019 to be lost by forfeit by Zimbabwe (0-3).

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee orders the Zimbabwe Football Association to pay a fine to the amount of CHF 10,000. In application of art. 6 par. 1(a) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the Zimbabwe Football Association is warned on its future conduct. The above fine is to be paid within thirty (30) days of notification of the present decision,” reads the statement.

The Mighty Warriors, who had lost the first leg 0-5, failed to fulfil the fixture after some clubs, most of them funded by security services, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Defence Forces and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, withdrew their players from camp on the eve of the match under still to be clear reasons.

The clubs are alleged to have been incensed by the association’s failure to pay the players allowances, an allegation that the association has since disputed as it has emerged that the players were actually paid their dues.

They had been promised to be paid their outstanding allowances after the second leg from a US$100 000 grant that had come from Fifa but former Zifa employee Lazarus Mhurushomana won a court order to garnish the Zifa account over some outstanding salary dispute issues.

Zifa have however, questioned the timing of the withdrawal of the players in the middle of the night and after both teams had attended a pre-match meeting with the match referees. The Chronicle

EcoCash goes to court over cash ban

CASSAVA Smartech Zimbabwe Limited has approached the High Court seeking to nullify the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s directive to shut down its EcoCash cash-in and cash-out facilities, saying the move was unlawful.

File picture of EcoCash agents
File picture of EcoCash agents

The company argues that the directive by RBZ is ultra vires Section 10 of the National Payments Systems Act (Chapter 24:23) under which it was made.

Cassava Smartech is represented by Mtetwa and Nyambirai Legal Practitioners and the matter is yet to be set down for hearing.

The RBZ yesterday banned all cash-in, cash-out and cash-back transactions, as the platforms had become tools to extort cash and cause price instability.

The Central Bank also warned banks, mobile payment system providers and other economic agents to ensure that the entire ecosystem operates within the confines of the law and enforce compliance.

However, the shutdown, Cassava Smartech is arguing in an urgent chamber application for a temporary interdict, will cause financial loss to the company and to millions of innocent users.

Reads the application: “The directive by the defendant to shut down the EcoCash cash-in and cash-out facilities is ultra vires Section 10 of the National Payments Systems Act (Chapter 24:23) under which it purports to have been made.

“EcoCash and its facilities is duly recognised by the RBZ in accordance with the National Payments Systems Act. That recognition gives applicant and its clients a right to use these facilities.

“Section 10 only authorise RBZ to act in the event that the system has itself done or omitted to do something. The applicant is not punishable where some users are alleged to have committed abuse.

“The approach in that case is to penalise the defaulting users. There is no wrong doing by the EcoCash system or its management board so the kind of wrong doing alleged by the respondent does not fall within the power that RBZ has under section 10 of the Act.”

The lawyers also revealed that the EcoCash platform has 10 562 070 users of which 6 400 000 have been active during the last 90 days.

“Of the registered users 6 337 242 are rural customers while 4 224 828 are urban customers,” read the papers.

“From September 2011 when the cash-in facility was introduced 227 519 851 transactions worth US$10 195 546 216 plus ZW$7 542 785 610 were conducted. On the other hand, cash-out transactions worth US$8 657 704 182 plus ZW$4 142862 274 were done.

“Cash-in and cash-out facilities enable the population to deposit cash with 51 000 EcoCash agents, more than the number of banking branches.” The Chronicle

Nakamba runaway winner as Zim fans flood Villa poll

0

ZIMBABWEAN football fans bombarded the Aston Villa official Twitter page and left Marvelous Nakamba a runaway winner in the poll for the man-of-the-match award for the English Premiership match against Burnley on Saturday.

Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth more than £11m for Club Brugge midfielder Marvelous Nakamba
Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba

The game ended 2-2.

Nakamba, who has forced his way into the starting XI at Villa after being given time to recover from the knock he received at the AFCON finals and also get himself into shape, was a clear winner of the poll with 57 percent of the vote.

Scotsman John McGinn, who scored for the Birmingham club on Saturday, came second in the poll with 38 percent of the vote.

Dutchman Anwar El Ghazi, who clipped Villa into the lead, finished last with just 2 percent of the vote, just behind Matty Target who had a 3 percent share of the poll.

A number of Zimbabwean football fans went onto the Villa official Twitter page to cast their vote, but to be fair, Nakamba was outstanding on the afternoon, a good number of others also voted for him.

Journalist Liam Bryan of SBNation had also named the Zimbabwean enforcer as his outstanding player during the match.

“It was another disappointing result at the true home of English football as Burnley came back twice from a goal down to draw with Aston Villa, a game that Dean Smith’s side should have realistically won,’’ Bryan wrote.

“One of the star men who marshalled the midfield throughout the fixture was my Man-of-the-Match Marvelous Nakamba.

“The Zimbabwean was a pivotal figure in Dean Smith’s side with the midfielder consistently pressuring Burnley in possession and for the majority of the time successfully intercepting the ball.

“With the club only spending £11 million on the 25-year-old from Club Brugge, Nakamba has completely re-energised the midfield with his tenacity and artfulness impressing the Villa faithful and if he continues to make an impression on a consistent basis then he could become one of the most important players in the squad.’’ The Birmingham Mail were also impressed by Nakamba.

“Neat and tidy once again, possesses a pinging cross-field pass and hammered a couple out to John McGinn and then El Ghazi. Villa’s insurance policy and broke up the play.

“A tidy, tidy player in the middle of the park but imposed himself less as Villa chased for a winner,’’ they said as they gave him a rating of seven out of 10.’’

And, this is what others said:

Adam Theofilatos

“The man is a machine. A joy to watch!!’’

Emmerson Shongwe

“I keep refreshing to check the results. Now the Nakamba Cruise is in the waters. Let’s go sailing.’’

Rich Smith

“Marvellous didn’t put a foot wrong… the man was the best player on the pitch 10/10, McGinn is a 9 or 10/10 every game.’’

Zach Hart

“McGinn for me. Nakamba a close second. Cool head on Nakamba but McGinn just didn’t stop running or tackling.’’

Chris Caines

‘’Nakamba was reliable and played the right passes as the right time. He pushed play forward, but always safely.’’

Nation Mudzitirwa

‘’@AVFCOfficial is a Zimbabwean football club operating in England all majority Zimbabweans will vote for Nakamba.’’

Liam Bryan

‘’If even he doesn’t play, everyone from #Zimbabwe will still vote for him, for the best good looking substitute.’’ The Herald

Old Mutual slams on-off CEO Moyo

At loggerheads . . . Old Mutual’s on-off CEO Peter Moyo (left) and group chairperson Trevor Manuel are at the centre of a dispute which saw the former being fired from his position

Old Mutual has slammed on-off CEO Peter Moyo, saying the ongoing dispute between him and the insurer is a “public spectacle” and an indication that Moyo “continues to place his interests ahead of Old Mutual and its shareholders”.

At loggerheads . . . Old Mutual’s on-off CEO Peter Moyo (left) and group chairperson Trevor Manuel are at the centre of a dispute which saw the former being fired from his position
At loggerheads . . . Old Mutual’s on-off CEO Peter Moyo (left) and group chairperson Trevor Manuel are at the centre of a dispute which saw the former being fired from his position

The insurer also blamed an alleged “lack of regard for the company’s interests” on Moyo’s part for a loss of confidence among board members in the axed chief executive.

“Interim CEO Iain Williamson, a veteran at Old Mutual of 26 years standing, is doing a sterling job, and operationally the business continues uninterrupted,” Old Mutual said in a statement yesterday.

“The Board would like to assure our customers, staff, investors and other stakeholders that it will
do everything within its power to resolve this
matter speedily and in the best interest of the company.”

The drawn-out public spat between Mr Moyo and the insurer was having a damaging effect on public morale in South Africa, Old Mutual added, saying that “public feuding at a bellwether financial services company does little to reassure South Africans that our economy is in good hands”.

Mr Moyo has been refused entry to Old Mutual’s offices three times after the court ordered that he had to be reinstated. He has been fired from the insurer twice. Old Mutual believes the second axing stands.

For his part, Mr Moyo believes the insurer is in contempt of court for blocking him from returning to work. He also reportedly plans to file an application to have Old Mutual’s directors declared delinquent.

‘Untenable’

While Old Mutual promised stakeholders yesterday that it was committed to a speedy resolution, it alleged it was “critical” to remind stakeholders that Mr Moyo had started the feud.

“This situation first arose because the former CEO violated the terms of his employment contract by placing his private financial interests ahead of the company,” the statement said.

Old Mutual claimed Mr Moyo’s “unprofessionalism persists”, suggesting a working relationship would be impossible.

“Regrettably, Mr Moyo’s unprofessionalism persists. He has effectively admitted that the relationship with Old Mutual has irretrievably broken down and he is not answerable to the Board.

“It is difficult to see how he then believes he should resume his duties as CEO, even as the company has instituted an appeal of the original High Court finding, which will now be heard by the full bench of three High Court judges.”

Old Mutual initially dismissed Mr Moyo over an alleged conflict of interest relating to dividends from a company he co-founded, namely NMT Capital. The conflict of interest arose, according to Old Mutual, when Mr Moyo disbursed dividends to shareholders while the Old Mutual preferential dividends, as an institutional investor, were in arrears. At the time, Mr Moyo countered that Old Mutual chairperson Trevor Manuel was behind his sacking.

In its statement yesterday, Old Mutual claimed it had engaged Mr Moyo “for months” before his initial dismissal.

‘Above reproach’

“However, it became clear that he and the Board had a difference of opinion about his transgressions and how to resolve them. Following the exchange of various correspondence and a meeting where Mr Moyo was given yet another chance to address the situation, the Board, on the basis of legal advice, reached the difficult conclusion that his continued employment was untenable.”

Corporate governance and management at Old Mutual should be “above reproach”, it said, and claimed Mr Moyo’s actions “significantly undermined this”.

Old Mutual director Nombulelo Pinky Moholi suddenly resigned late in September. In a recent interview with Business Day, Moholi had referred to Mr Moyo as “talented” and “experienced”, saying it was difficult for the board to conclude that it had lost confidence in him.

Shortly before Moholi’s resignation, board chair Trevor Manuel was forced to apologise for referring to High Court judge Brian Mashile as a “single individual who happens to wear a robe” after Mashile ruled in Moyo’s favour.

Fin24 also previously reported that prior to that incident, some members of the board had made progress in talks with Mr Moyo in an attempt to end the fight. Moholi, along with fellow board members Paul Baloyi and Itumeleng Kgaboesele, were said to have led the talks with Mr Moyo. — Fin24.

By Robson Sharuko

Norman Mapeza’s management team say their client’s interests have been safeguarded after the trailblazing gaffer took a huge gamble and plunged into the lion’s den, joining the world’s most turbulent football club.

A HIGH-RISK MOVE . . . Norman Mapeza has joined Chippa United of the South African Premiership and his handlers say they have secured guarantees to ensure the interests of their client are safeguarded at a club known for hiring and firing coaches
A HIGH-RISK MOVE . . . Norman Mapeza has joined Chippa United of the South African Premiership and his handlers say they have secured guarantees to ensure the interests of their client are safeguarded at a club known for hiring and firing coaches

The 47-year-old coach agreed to a three-year deal to coach South African Premiership side Chippa United, arguably the most chaotic football club in the world in terms of chopping and changing coaches, with more than 20 coaches having come and gone in the past six years.

The last coach in charge lasted just TWO games.

The longest-serving coach, Dan Maselela, was at the club for 402 days in which he took charge of 39 matches while Clinton Larsen, who was sacked this season, is the second longest-serving coach at the team after guiding them to 22 matches in 247 days.

Some of those who have been axed include Manqoba Mnqithi, Julius Dube, Roger Sikhakhane, who spent just 160 days, in which he took charge of 12 games.

The others are Wilfred Mugeyi, Farouk Adams, Ian Palmer, Vladmir Heric, Kosta Papic, Ernest Middendorp and Teboho Moloi. Middendorp is now in charge of Kaizer Chiefs.

Moloi lasted 170 days, taking charge of just 23 games, while the nomadic Mark Harrison, who has coached CAPS United and Harare City in the domestic Premiership, was only at Chippa United for 178 days and in charge of just 14 matches.

Joel Masutha lasted slightly over one month, 39 days to be precise, and guided the team for five games before the inevitable axe fell on him while Eric Tinkler stayed a bit longer, 102 days, and 10 matches in charge of the side.

Mapeza’s manager, Gibson Mahachi, told The Herald yesterday they had taken into consideration issues related to the huge turnover of coaches at Chippa United and came up with clauses, in the contract, that will guarantee the interests of the former FC Platinum gaffer.

“It’s one of the major things that we discussed and there were some clauses in the contract that we were not comfortable with because we felt that they would leave the coach exposed,’’ said Mahachi.

“We discussed those issues, including a clause where they had said they wanted to review the performance of the coach after three games, and we said that wasn’t feasible since the coach is coming into a side that already has players which he didn’t recruit and will need more time to understand the system and make decisions.

“They agreed to waive that and we also got some guarantees that protect the coach and, at the end of the day, we struck some agreement.

“The bottom line is that this is a result-oriented job and whichever way we look at it, whatever we say or want, the results have to be positive and we know that.

“Chippa United were intent that they wanted their man, they believe he suits perfectly into the kind of coach they were looking for, and it’s a chance for Norman to also go there and prove himself that he can make a difference.

“He is a young coach and has his ambitions and, at times, the best guys differentiate themselves from others by the way they are prepared to take risks, to go where others probably fear to go, and Norman is happy with the deal that has been offered and we have taken it.’’

Mahachi said it was Chippa United who made the first move because the club owner felt Mapeza could add real value to his team.

“They said they wanted the coach, because they believe he can bring value to the team, and we discussed a lot of things before we could commit themselves,’’ said Mahachi.

“We completed the deal from here in Harare and we have to wait for the paperwork to be conducted for Norman to then go and start his new job.’’

Reports in the South African media had suggested Mapeza was already in South Africa and was set to be in the stands last night to watch Chippa United battle Bidvest Wits in an ABSA Premiership match.

Mbuyiselo Sambu took charge of the team last night at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Businessman Siviwe Mpengesi, who owns the club, is known for his ruthless streak when it comes to the hiring and firing of coaches.

He is five years younger than Mapeza and arrived in Cape Town, at the age of 18, from his village in the Eastern Cape with not even a penny, nor an education, but only driven by his dreams.

Now, he is a millionaire businessman who has interests in waste management, trucking, print/mail, clothing, security and cleaning services and properties in Cape Town, East London and Johannesburg.

“We are happy to have a coach like Mapeza and we congratulate him. Not only is he highly experienced, but also he is highly regarded by colleagues in the football fraternity,” Mpengesi told Kickoff.com

“He brings a wealth of experience that will no doubt inspire the players and will take the team to greater heights.”

Former Chippa United coach, Masutha, who is now in charge of lower league side Real Kings, had also provided some advice this week to those interested in taking the job.

“You just need to go there with a laptop and the tracksuit you’re wearing, don’t bring anything else,” he told Kick.Off.com

Mapeza is no stranger to South African football after a short stint at Ajax Cape Town during the 2005/2006 season.

But, the gaffer, who won three league championships on the domestic front (two with FC Platinum and one with Monomotapa), has never been at a club as turbulent as Chippa United.

Even some of the players at the team have been coming out now to reveal that the frequent changes in their dressing room were affecting their performance.

“It’s really affecting us. You could see our performance especially in the first half, the way we were playing, players are down, we are not okay, we also feel that pain,” Andile Mbenyane, the most experienced player in the team, said.

Mapeza will become the second Zimbabwean coach in Super Diski with Kaitano Tembo doing well at SuperSport United who will play in the MTN8 Cup final on Saturday in Soweto. The Herald

Raheem Sterling springs from bench as Manchester City down Dinamo Zagreb

0

By Chris Bevan |BBC Sport|

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he is “so sorry” for Phil Foden after he and Raheem Sterling came off the bench to score in a 2-0 win over a stubborn Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Sterling has been directly involved in 18 goals in his last 16 home appearances in the Champions League for Manchester City
Sterling has been directly involved in 18 goals in his last 16 home appearances in the Champions League for Manchester City

Sterling swept home from a Riyad Mahrez cross midway through the second half, then set up 19-year-old Foden in stoppage time as City’s second successive win took them top of Group C.

Guardiola said: “He (Foden) has incredible finishing and made an incredible step forward tonight.

“I am so sorry for him – he deserves to play more minutes. I am sure he will contribute and help us more.”

The England squad for the next round of internationals is named on Thursday.

“I am buzzing for Phil Foden,” Sterling told BT Sport. “I want him in the national team. If he keeps going he will be there.”

Foden said: “You have to show the manager what you can do each day in training. Every young kid wants to play but you have to keep patient.”

In truth, this should have been a much bigger victory, with City wasting a host of first-half chances, but in the end they were grateful to Sterling for making the difference.

Until he broke the deadlock from close range with his ninth goal of the season, it had been an unexpectedly frustrating night for Guardiola’s side, despite enjoying more than 80% of possession.

It was not the case that City struggled to create chances in the absence of the injured Kevin de Bruyne, but they were unable to take them until the second half.

Sergio Aguero was the first to waste an opportunity, with the Argentine rounding Zagreb keeper Dominik Livakovic from a poor backpass but seeing him recover with a diving save.

Bernardo Silva was also off target from two good openings and Aguero skied another effort before Ilkay Gundogan blasted a shot against the bar and David Silva fired wide from close range.

When Aguero did finally get the ball in the net, Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk had already blown his whistle for a handball by Bernardo Silva.

The second half saw Croatian champions Dinamo, who were roared on by their fans throughout, put up more resistance before Sterling replaced Bernardo Silva, and quickly gave City their breakthrough.

More chances followed but it fell to Foden to finish off Zagreb with a fine first-time strike from a swift counter-attack.

It gives City their second successive Group C win and leaves them well placed to make the last 16 for a seventh successive season, while Zagreb have now suffered 13 away group game defeats in a row – a Champions League record.

Guardiola gets the result he wanted

Guardiola spoke before the game about having to “seduce” City fans who are reluctant to fall for the charms of the Champions League, preferring instead Premier League success.

So far, little seems to have changed, the competition’s anthem being roundly booed again inside the Etihad before kick-off providing the main example of that.

The atmosphere after that was far from flat, but this one-sided affair was never going to be a fixture that provided the electricity from the stands that Guardiola craves.

While City’s fans were enthusiastic enough throughout, their passion could never match that of the Zagreb supporters, who chanted throughout and removed their shirts en masse when they fell behind.

Guardiola’s emotions were also on display, with his frustration with the officials evident on more than one occasion as he prowled his technical area.

But he got the result he wanted, with City’s fifth successive win since their shock defeat at Norwich providing more evidence that, if they were ever in crisis, it is now over.

Guardiola hopes De Bruyne will be back soon

Guardiola said after the game that he does not think De Bruyne’s groin problem is serious, which is a rare bit of of good news for City in a season when they have lost Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte to long-term injuries.

De Bruyne missed most of last season through injury and, while City’s domestic treble clearly showed they were able to cope, his nine assists this season have been a timely reminder of his talents.

Without him, City’s midfield were still able to carve Zagreb open easily enough before the break, but you felt they missed the brilliant Belgian more when the away side dug in after the break.

Although City tried to replicate De Bruyne’s dangerous balls into the box, notably through Benjamin Mendy on the left, they were far less effective.

With Mahrez notably quieter than against Everton at the weekend, City did not carry the same threat on the ball in wide areas, at least until Sterling arrived on the scene.

Man of the match – Raheem Sterling (Man City)

Made a difference in attack immediately and should have won a free-kick as soon as he came on when he was fouled on the edge of the area. Guardiola was booked for complaining about that decision, but he was soon celebrating Sterling’s goal.

What next?

City’s next game sees them back at the Etihad to face Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday (14:00 BST).

They resume their Champions League campaign on 22 October, at home to Atalanta (20:00), when Dinamo Zagreb are away at Shakhtar Donetsk (17:55).

Magical Mahrez – the stats

  • Manchester City have won five consecutive Champions League home matches for the first time.
  • City completed 626 more passes than Dinamo Zagreb (727-100), also accumulating 71 more touches in their opponents’ box (73-2).
  • Pep Guardiola has won all three of his Champions League matches against Dinamo Zagreb – his sides have scored nine goals without conceding.
  • Riyad Mahrez has been directly involved in eight goals in eight Champions League appearances for City (2 goals, 6 assists), with three of those coming this season.
  • Raheem Sterling has been directly involved in 19 goals in his past 16 home appearances in the Champions League for City (11 goals, eight assists).

US rapper Lil Nas X has said that when he was younger he hoped being gay was just “a phase”.

Lil Nas XIn an interview with CBS, the Old Town Road hitmaker says he knew as a teenager that he was gay and would “would just pray and pray” that his sexuality “would go away”.

In a teaser clip that aired on Monday, the rapper discusses his struggle with his sexuality.

But he acknowledges that his fame has made it easier for him to come out.

“Me being in this position, it’s easy for me.”

“But some little boy 10 miles from here, it’s not going to be good for him.”

Lil Nas X – real name Montero Lamar Hill – says there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of acceptance for the LGBT community in society.

“We still have a long way to go, because it’s not like everybody is messing with me now. ‘Of course somebody who’s listening to me in school right now, it’s like, ‘You’re gay, cause you’re listening to him.’ There’s still lot to be done.”

Public figures coming out will “always help” others who may be struggling in the same way, he adds.

The viral rapper officially came out as gay in his song called c7osure, which was released in June.

He tweeted: “Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care…but before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to c7osure,”

The tweet was posted on 30 June – the last day of this year’s global Pride Month.

The singer then posted a second tweet which focused on the artwork for the EP, zooming in on part of the artwork that is a rainbow – the symbol of gay pride.

He’s recently announced that he’s taking a break from music, cancelling two shows – but promising to “make it up” to his fans.

It comes after his song Old Town Road reached number one in the UK and spent a record 19 weeks at the top of the US Billboard 100 this year. BBC News
