Benza, Mupfurutsa and Mhlophe among names rumoured for PSL chairmanship

HARARE – Herentals owner Innocent Benza, Simba Bhora chairman Isiah Mupfurutsa and Highlanders chairperson Kenneth Mhlophe, are some of the names being circulated in football circles as potential candidates for the vacant Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairmanship.

On Thursday, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), announced the road map for the highly anticipated elections for both the PSL and the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League (ZWPSL).

The elections are scheduled for 25 July, with the specific city and venue to be announced in due course.

For the PSL, the election will usher in a new board consisting of a chairperson, vice-chairperson, and three executive committee members.

The ZWPSL will elect a chairperson, vice-chairperson and five board members.

Prior to ZIFA’s announcement, a lot of speculation had already begun circulating, with Benza, Mupfurutsa and Mhlophe being touted as possible contenders for the top PSL post.

However, none of the three has publicly declared their intention to contest although sources close to them suggest they may be considering running.

At this stage, their potential candidacies remain speculative.

With just over two months remaining until the official voting date, it remains to be seen who will seek nomination for the elections.

The PSL chairmanship has been vacant since Farai Jere resigned in 2024 to pursue the ZIFA presidency, a race he eventually withdrew from.

Jere is now the chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
