HARARE – The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has issued a statement notifying its stakeholders and the public that four teams will be relegated at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, which ends this coming weekend.
The announcement follows a letter from the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) last week proposing an expansion of the league from 18 teams to 20.
The PSL swiftly convened an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to discuss the proposal among other issues.
A majority of the governors unanimously agreed to increase the number of teams, although the decision drew public criticism.
ZIFA later made a U-turn, instructing the PSL to maintain the current format.
In a statement, the PSL, now abiding by ZIFA’s directive not to increase the number of teams, wrote:
“This serves to inform you that the Premier Soccer League wrote to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) informing them of the resolutions passed at the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on November 18, 2025.
“The PSL officially communicated its resolutions specifically the proposal to increase the number of participating teams and the suspension of relegation for the 2025 season, along with a request for guidance on the implementation process.
“ZIFA responded via a letter dated 18 November 2025, formally rejecting the PSL’s position. ZIFA’s directive stated the following:
- Four (4) clubs must be relegated at the conclusion of the current Castle Premier Soccer League season, which ends on 23 November 2025.
-
Any proposal to increase the number of participating teams, or any other related resolution must be submitted to ZIFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) Congress in 2026 for formal consideration.
“The position outlined by ZIFA is now effective and immediately binding. For the avoidance of doubt and to ensure adherence to ZIFA’s ruling, the Premier Soccer League will proceed with the relegation of four (4) teams at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
“Deliberations between the two institutions to seek an amicable, long-term resolution on the matter will continue,” wrote the PSL.
This is not the first time ZIFA has proposed increasing the number of teams from 18 to 20 in the PSL.
