‘We can’t have a Nigerian compete in Miss SA’ – Minister Gayton McKenzie

Controversial South African Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton Mckenzie has said he will probe how Chidimma Adetshina became a contestant on this year’s edition of the Miss South Africa pageant, after a video of her celebrating with the Nigerian half of her family sparked fresh outrage in Mzansi.

In the video, Adetshina is seen wearing a sash with the words Miss SA 2024 contestant. She is serenaded by members of her Nigerian family at what looks like a church.

The video led to an outcry that if she were to win, Adetshina would not be a true representative of South African values.

Adetshina has been subjected to scrutiny on social media due to her bloodline. She is a South African, born at Soweto’s Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital to a Nigerian father and a mother of Mozambican descent.

Mckenzie, who has risen to prominence with his anti-immigration stance, said he would investigate further to find out how Adetshina had managed to find her way to the final rounds of South Africa’s most popular pageant.

“I just returned from Paris and will definitely get more information tomorrow, we truly cannot have Nigerians compete in our Miss SA competition. I wanna get all facts before I comment but it gives funny vibes already,” McKenzie said.

Miss SA has already addressed the concerns, saying that Adetshina is eligible to enter the competition.

According to the requirements on their website: “The applicant must be a South African citizen and in possession of a valid South African ID document or passport.

“If the applicant holds dual citizenship, they must provide details of both. All the Miss South Africa Top 30 contestants met these requirements.”
