Highlanders FC ended a turbulent week on a positive note after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Triangle United FC in a dramatic match at Barbourfields Stadium.

The win came against the backdrop of internal challenges at Highlanders, where players had reportedly disrupted training sessions during the week amid salary-related disputes.

Despite the off-field instability, Bosso managed to produce enough determination to collect maximum points in a match dominated as much by controversy as football.

The breakthrough came in the 64th minute when Reason Sibanda bundled the ball into the net during a crowded goalmouth scramble.

However, the goal immediately sparked heated protests from Triangle United players, who claimed goalkeeper Panashe Nyabunga had been fouled in the build-up.

Referee Prince Nyoni refused to reverse the decision, leading to tense scenes on the pitch as Triangle players surrounded the officials.

The confrontation eventually led to an extraordinary delay lasting nearly 25 minutes while Nyabunga received medical attention and match officials attempted to calm the situation.

Fourth official Mhaka Magare was forced to intervene as tempers flared and confusion spread across the stadium.

The prolonged stoppage disrupted the flow of the match and created frustration among supporters inside Barbourfields.

Eventually, Triangle replaced Nyabunga with substitute goalkeeper David Makure, allowing play to resume after one of the strangest interruptions seen in the local league in recent years.

Before the controversy, Highlanders had begun brightly as they attempted to put a difficult week behind them.

Bosso appealed for an early penalty after claims that Jordan Pedra handled the ball inside the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.

Mongameli Tshuma looked dangerous in attack, while Isaac Ngoma missed a good chance from close range.

Highlanders were later forced into an early substitution after Never Rauzhi limped off injured, with Shelton Moyo introduced in his place.

Triangle gradually settled into the game and created chances of their own. Nyasha Chintuli squandered a promising opportunity, while Pedra failed to connect properly with a dangerous cross.

Bosso captain Darlington Mukuli nearly opened the scoring before halftime with an effort that flashed narrowly across goal.

After the restart, Highlanders increased the pressure.

Moyo failed to capitalise on a free-kick opportunity before Prince Ndlovu fired wide.

Sibanda eventually delivered the decisive touch in a goal that reflected the scrappy and tense nature of the contest.

When play resumed after the lengthy stoppage, Triangle United launched wave after wave of attacks during a massive 25 minutes of added time.

Highlanders goalkeeper Aron Ngwenya produced an important late save to preserve the lead as Bosso held on under pressure.

At full-time, the sense of relief around Barbourfields outweighed celebration.

Speaking after the match, Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwari praised his players for showing resilience during a difficult period.

He acknowledged the challenges the team had faced during the week and said some victories require determination rather than attractive football.

Triangle coach Lloyd Chitembwe admitted disappointment with the result but expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance.
