CAPS United crush Dynamos’ bus dream in dramatic Harare Derby win

Makepekepe reclaim top spot after denying DeMbare victory needed to secure Wicknell Chivayo’s bus pledge

The Harare Derby delivered drama, tension and heartbreak on Sunday as CAPS United defeated old rivals Dynamos FC 2-1 at Rufaro Stadium to reclaim top spot in the league standings.

Beyond the usual bragging rights attached to Zimbabwe’s biggest football rivalry, this year’s clash carried an added layer of pressure after controversial tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo reportedly pledged to reward Dynamos with a luxury team bus worth more than US$200,000 if they secured victory.

Instead, Makepekepe spoiled the occasion and left DeMbare supporters devastated after a late penalty sealed a memorable win.

Ishmael Wadi opened the scoring early for CAPS United before Jairos Kasondo equalised from the penalty spot for Dynamos late in the second half. Veteran defender Kudzai Chigwida eventually settled the encounter deep into added time with another penalty.

The atmosphere at Rufaro reflected the significance of the match, with kick-off delayed by 15 minutes as officials struggled to clear long queues outside the packed stadium.

CAPS United entered the derby determined to return to the summit after being temporarily overtaken by Hardrock on the league table. Club president Farai Jere also reportedly motivated the squad by doubling the winning bonus to US$1,000 per player.

For Dynamos, the stakes were equally high as fans dreamed of both a derby victory and the promised new team bus.

However, CAPS United quickly silenced the larger DeMbare crowd when Wadi headed home from a corner delivered by Chawanangwa Kaonga inside the opening 10 minutes.

The Green Machine controlled much of the first half, with Wadi repeatedly troubling the Dynamos defence. Midfielders Bret Amidu, Lloyd Njaliwa and captain Richard Hachiro dominated possession and dictated the pace of the game.

Dynamos goalkeeper Harmony Nare, despite being criticised for the opening goal, kept his side alive with a number of important saves, including a close-range stop to deny Kaonga after a swift counterattack.

After the break, CAPS United continued to threaten while Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe introduced several substitutions in an attempt to revive his side.

Dynamos eventually found a lifeline when Perfect Chikwende was adjudged to have been fouled inside the penalty area by defender Nyasha Gurende.

The decision angered CAPS supporters, who briefly disrupted play by throwing objects onto the pitch.

Kasondo calmly converted the penalty to level the scores and briefly reignite hopes among the DeMbare faithful.

But the drama was not over.

Deep into stoppage time, CAPS United were awarded a penalty after substitute Junior Banisi collided with Christopher Netty inside the box.

Chigwida stepped up and confidently converted from the spot, securing maximum points for CAPS United and crushing Dynamos’ hopes of claiming the promised bus.

After the match, Mangombe admitted the defeat was painful, especially coming after last week’s loss to Chicken Inn. Dynamos are now winless in five matches, having recorded three draws and two defeats.

CAPS United coach Takesure Chiragwi praised his team’s persistence and fighting spirit after reclaiming first place on the table.

The result leaves CAPS United on 25 points from 12 matches, one point ahead of Hardrock, while Dynamos slipped to seventh place with 17 points.
