HARARE – One thing about Zimbabweans is that they will rally behind one of their own as long as it doesn’t involve them parting with their hard-earned money.
The Miss Universe pageant is on, and Lyshanda Moyas, is representing Zimbabwe at the global cat-walking competition.
Concerns have been raised over the low number of votes for Zimbabwe’s top model, with a comparison being made to other pop-up socialites who get massive numbers of followers overnight.
Social media user Rose Mudiwa sparked a topic of concern as to why people have not been really voting for Moyas.
She wrote, “Guys, I don’t understand you. The girl from the high school fight, didn’t he have a page created for her and got over 100000 followers overnight? But Miss Universe Zimbabwe right now only has 6000 votes.
“Apa 6000 are even voting more than once. Meaning the total number of voters could be 3000 people who voted twice. Something is not quite right. Munosvota.”

Zimbos were quick to explain why they couldn’t vote on the panel, most of them saying they wanted to but got restrained by finances.
“FYI: If you download the Miss Universe app, it turns out that voting isn’t entirely free. Votes are sold in different quantities, starting from US$0.99 for 3 votes up to US$199.99 for 1,000 votes.
“This clearly calls for a strategic approach, perhaps securing a corporate sponsor or partners who can commit to purchasing a set number of votes.
“Otherwise, it becomes somewhat biased, since contestants with greater financial backing or sponsor access naturally stand a better chance of receiving more votes,” said chido_cleo_mpemba.

Miss_Kado commented, saying, “Ini hangu handina Mari yacho ndikutotamburawo.”
Another user, ms.mufarostellar raised the same concern as Miss_Kado, saying, I tried to vote ndakaona zvinoda mari ini ndiri mwana wetyoro zvangu iiihhhhhhh.”
“Ko hamuchatiudzewo kuti maVotes acho haasi emahara. Haa bho futi,” said user thuguz.on.gram.
Most Zimbabweans on social media said they were willing to vote, but the issue is that they don’t have the money for the votes.
It’s also worth noting that, if one watches an ad on the Miss Universe App, they get a free vote.
