Scottland defender Kevin Moyo among contenders for Soccer Star of the Year

Must Try

HARARE – Kevin Moyo, a centre back with newly crowned champions Scottland FC, is among the names being tipped to win the prestigious 2025 Premier Soccer League (PSL) Soccer Star of the Year award following the 32-year-old’s stellar performances this season.

A player who rarely makes headlines, perhaps due to his defensive position, Moyo has been consistent throughout the campaign.

He played a pivotal role in helping Scottland, the PSL newcomers, clinch the league title in their debut top-flight season after gaining promotion from Division One.

With that achievement, Scottland ended a 41-year record in Zimbabwean football. Before them, Black Rhinos were the only club to win the championship immediately after promotion.

Rhinos achieved the feat back in 1984.

Now, Mabviravira have become only the second club in the country to replicate that success, thanks in large part to Moyo and his teammates.

Moyo’s importance to the team is reflected in his impressive statistics.

He has featured in all 32 of Scottland’s matches, amassing 2,880 minutes of play while helping the league’s best defence register numerous clean sheets.

The team has conceded just 19 goals all season.

At the weekend, Moyo joined an elite group of players to have won four Zimbabwean league titles, adding this year’s championship to the three he previously lifted with FC Platinum (2017–2019).

Given his consistency and leadership at the back, many football fans and journalists see Moyo as a strong favourite for this year’s top individual accolade.

“Kevin Moyo deserves to be crowned the 2025 Soccer Star of the Year following his performances,” said some journalists who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A recent Soccer24 Facebook post also showed Moyo as a clear fan favourite for the top award.

“He deserves to be called Soccer Star of the Year. I’ll be surprised if they give it to anyone else,” commented Tawanda Ndhlela.

“This one (Moyo) is more than good. He was on Chippa United’s books and performed very well. He’s disciplined. For me, he deserves the Soccer Star of the Year award,” wrote Enocent Yizoyizo Sibanda.

“The unsung hero! Keep working, Moyo — you are the pillar of Scottland’s defence. You’ve been a marvel to watch. My Soccer Star of the Year for the 2025 season,” added Lwandle Mpofu.

If selected for the remaining two matches, Moyo could complete the season having featured in all 34 league games.

With his discipline, he is also on course to finish the campaign with just two yellow cards to his name.
