Turning forty is a milestone—one worthy of joy, gratitude, and celebration. To her credit, Pokello’s milestone is a gift of life, and congratulations are in order. But the optics surrounding the celebrations tell a different story.
Flying an entourage to Italy for several days of lavish festivities, while broadcasting each luxury outfit and moment on social media, strikes a nerve in the context of Zimbabwe’s harsh realities.
The Nation vs. The Narrative
Zimbabwe today is a nation where citizens cannot drive a hundred meters without encountering potholes, where inflation erodes the dignity of salaries, and where the majority of people struggle daily for the basics of life.
Against this backdrop, images of extravagance from political families do not land as harmless entertainment; they highlight the widening disconnect between the ruling elite and the people they govern.
The Politics of Perception
Beyond economics, there is also the personal and cultural dimension. Being a second wife to a president’s son already carries layers of complexity in a traditional society.
For the first wife, every post, every cheer, and every image of splendor can feel like a silent wound—an unspoken reminder that her pain plays out before the public eye.
For citizens, the optics reinforce a narrative long associated with African strongmen and their families: that power is a gateway to unchecked privilege.
And when such privilege is flaunted without care, it reads less like celebration and more like indifference to the suffering of the nation.
The Spending Mirror
There is a saying that how money is made is often reflected in how it is spent. Those who work hard, sweat, and sacrifice tend to carry a certain humility in their lifestyle choices. Those who inherit or exploit systems of power often reveal their story in conspicuous consumption.
At the end of the day, the issue is not that Pokello turned forty or even that she celebrated it. The issue is the dissonance. In a nation crippled by poverty and dysfunction, the spectacle of luxury becomes tone deaf, if not insulting.
African leaders and their families would do well to remember that while they cannot be told how to live their lives, they can choose how to manage perception. Sometimes, even a performance of empathy is better than no empathy at all.
Because in nations where people suffer, silence and modesty can speak louder than champagne and fireworks.
