HARARE – Real Betis Academy Zimbabwe chairman Gerald Sibanda has facilitated an international capacity-building trip for Scottland’s sports masseur, Lenon Gwara.
Gwara is currently in Spain, where he is undergoing intensive training programs focusing on modern sports therapy and physiotherapy techniques with top La Liga clubs including Sevilla FC and CD Leganes.
At Leganes, Gwara was presented with the club’s official playing kit, personally signed by the entire squad, as a special gift for Sakupwanya.
Scottland said the initiative is part of their broader Africa Project aimed at exposing local talent to international standards.
Expressing his gratitude, Gwara described the opportunity as a dream come true.
He thanked Scottland president Scott Sakupwanya and Sibanda for their support.
“It has been an great experience,” said Gwara who is also a certified instructor with the World Massage Federation.
“Special thanks to my mentor Tonderai Ndiraya and Hon. Sakupwanya for believing in me and opening international doors for African football professionals.”
Speaking on the initiative, Sibanda said: “With the help of Scottland president Scott Sakupwanya and the club itself, Gwara is in Spain to learn a thing or two, getting insight into how European clubs operate from a physiotherapist’s perspective.
“It’s a fact-finding trip set to help him grow and contribute more to the local game.”
During his stay, Gwara has trained with club medical staff, toured elite training facilities and worked closely with European physiotherapists.
This has made him gain first-hand knowledge on: Pre- and post-match recovery programs, injury treatment techniques, use of advanced sports therapy machines as well as modern approaches to player wellness and rehabilitation.
There is optimism Gwara’s visit could pave the way for a long-term partnership between Scottland and La Liga clubs.
