Faith and Legacy: Eunor Guti explains why she refused Wicknell Chivayo’s donation

HARARE – Eunor Guti, widow of the late Archbishop Ezekiel Guti, has cited principles rooted in her faith and her late husband’s legacy, as reasons why she declined a luxury vehicle and a large cash donation offered by flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

In a recent address to congregants of the Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa (ZAOGA) Forward in Faith Ministries, Guti revealed that she was approached by an unnamed intermediary who urged her to accept the offer on behalf of Chivayo.

The controversial businessman had pledged to donate a brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR and US$250,000 in cash.

Guti made it clear that she refused the gift after seeking divine guidance and reflecting on the values her late husband upheld throughout his ministry.

“I said I’m not going to take that money. They better use it somewhere else, but not even on our projects,” she said.

The prominent church leader explained that she had informed the church’s day-to-day board in advance, advising them that public speculation about the offer would likely follow. However, she stated that her decision was final and based on integrity.

“I knew I was not going to say yes because my father (her late husband) never walked that way,” she added.

The late Archbishop Ezekiel Guti, who founded ZAOGA in 1960, died in July 2023 and was buried on Bindura Mountain, the birthplace of the church.

Chivayo, known for his ostentatious lifestyle and controversial business dealings, publicly announced the intended gift in May via Facebook.

He claimed the donation was an act of gratitude toward Guti and a tribute to the late Archbishop, whom he credited with offering him spiritual guidance during difficult periods in his life.

“Please accept US$250,000 in CASH for fuel and your personal use,” Chivayo posted, along with a video showcasing the vehicle.

The donation, he said, was subject to the church’s governing board’s approval.

Guti, however, said she saw no need for such extravagance.

“I already have a Land Cruiser that I have been driving for all these years,” she told the congregation.

The offer had sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning the motives behind such high-profile donations from individuals whose wealth has often raised eyebrows.

Chivayo, an ex-convict, has previously been linked to government contracts and has been the subject of scrutiny over allegations of improperly secured tenders and unexplained wealth.

He was allegedly awarded a tender to supply 2023 election materials under shadowy circumstances. Chivayo reportedly benefitted more than US$40 million from the tender, part of the money which was later flagged by South African financial intelligence departments.
