Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his role as Theo on The Cosby Show, has reportedly drowned in Costa Rica, according to local authorities.
The Judicial Investigation Department of Costa Rica stated that the 54-year-old actor drowned Sunday afternoon at a beach on the Caribbean coast. Warner was swimming at Playa Grande de Cocles in Limon province when a strong current pulled him underwater.
Officials said that people on the beach rescued him, but by the time emergency responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross arrived, Warner showed no signs of life. He was later taken to the morgue.
According to the US celebrity news source People, Warner was vacationing with his family at the time of the incident.

The Cosby Show, which aired on NBC in the United States from 1984 to 1992, is remembered as a groundbreaking series for its depiction of a successful Black middle-class family. It also aired on Channel 4 in the UK.
The series’ main character, played by Bill Cosby, was Dr. Cliff Huxtable, with Malcolm-Jamal Warner portraying Theo, his only son.
The NBC sitcom remained America’s top-rated show for much of its original run. Warner appeared as Theo for all eight seasons and a total of 197 episodes, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986.
For many fans, one of the most memorable moments featuring Warner’s character is when he wore a comically misshapen designer shirt sewn by his on-screen sister Denise, played by Lisa Bonet.
