TEHRAN – Iranian military commanders and top officials were blown up in their headquarters and homes after Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran last night (Thursday) using over 200 fighter jets and explosive-laden drones.
Dubbed as Operation Rising Lion, Israel says it targeted military sites in Iran as well as nuclear facilities and the scientists who are working on them.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the sophisticated operation targeted an Iranian nuclear facility in Natanz as well as the country’s ballistic missile program.
US President Donald Trump has urged Iran to make a deal on its nuclear programme, warning of “even more brutal” Israeli attacks – Iran accused the US of supporting Israel’s strikes, which the US denied.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) says it managed to kill the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) chief Hossein Salami and other commanders.
The new head of the IRGC, Mohammad Pakpour, vowed that Israel will “suffer a bitter and painful fate with huge and destructive consequences”.
The statement adds that Iran will “avenge” those killed in the attack and goes on to say that Israel is “violating the national security and territorial integrity” of the country.
Iran meanwhile confirmed that six scientists have been killed, with state TV reporting that civilians, including children are among the dead.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to enact ‘painful revenge’ after the strikes warning Israel will face ‘severe punishment’.
Reports suggest three coordinated operations formed the basis of the Israeli attack as they used Commando units sent into Iran to deploy precision-guided weapons, used strike systems planted in civilian vehicles and covert drones inside Iran.
