HARARE – CAPS United have officially appointed former midfield star Ian Bakala as their new head coach, a dramatic U-turn from their initial announcement that he was joining as an assistant.
Previously club president Farai Jere on Tuesday, May 6, had said they would appoint a new coach to be deputised by Bakala following the promotion of previous coach Lloyd Chitembwe to the role of Technical Director.
“We are changing our current technical setup. We will have a new technical setup that will start this weekend. Ian Bakala will be the assistant coach in the new technical team. A new head coach will be announced on Thursday,” he told journalists.
A statement released on Thursday now confirms that Bakala is in fact the new Head Coach.
“CAPS United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of: Mr lan Bakala as Head Coach, Mr Alexio Sigion as Assistant Coach effective immediately, Mr Bakala will lead the team and assemble his backroom staff,” a club statement said.
“We wish Mr. Bakala and his team the very best in their new roles and look forward to their contributions to the club’s success!”
Bakala’s first test is a tricky encounter against city rivals Herentals at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.
The 44-year-old who currently heads the Zambia Under-17 national team, previously coached Nkana and Forest Rangers in Zambia’s top flight league.
CAPS United are currently fourth from the bottom in the 18-team Castle Lager Premier League, three points away from bottom club Triangle United.
