HARARE – Zimdancehall music legend Winky D’s stellar work has been recognised on the international stage, after his nomination for the 42nd edition of the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in the United States.
Winky D, who has been in red hot form recently, was nominated in the Best African Dancehall Entertainer category.
The awards are set to be held on 30 March at the Coral Springs Centre for Arts in Florida, United States.
“We at IRAWMA want to congratulate Winky D. Of Zimbabwe for being nominated for the 42nd International Reggae & World Music Awards for Best African Dancehall Entertainer!” the award ceremony said in a tweet announcing the nomination.
Winky D has been in the spotlight recently, after he seemingly took aim at controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, declaring in a live performed verse that he would not be bought by a car and would never sell out like other local celebrities receiving his cars from the corruption accused businessman.
Chivayo spent most of 2024 on a spending spree, giving out cars to individuals that range from musicians and football stars to civil servants and radio personalities.
Winky D, who has in the past been at odds with Zanu PF, showed that his views had not been moderated by perceived hostilities from the ruling party during a Saturday gig in Mbare, Harare.
The event, which marked the chanter’s first return to Mbare in seven years, was sponsored by a cigarette maker Swan Valley Group.
