The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed that two separate fatal accidents in Harare and Mvuma claimed the lives of nine people and injured 11 others on Thursday morning.
In the first incident, a Toyota Hiace kombi collided with a fuel tanker at the intersection of First Street and Bulawayo Road in Harare, killing seven people and injuring six others.
The kombi had turned into the path of the oncoming fuel tanker. The victims’ bodies were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:-
Susan Fly (37), a female adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Taonezvi Makumbe (54), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Benson Musimi (36), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Romeo Mahefu (20), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Egnes Maenzanise (48), a female adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Neli Gwezera (27), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
Aleck Dambaza (37), a male adult of Kuwadzana 5, Harare.
In a second accident, a Toyota Land Cruiser veered off the road and overturned on the Harare-Masvingo Road, claiming two lives and injuring five others.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma Hospital mortuary, while four of the injured are being treated at the same hospital.
One victim was transferred to a Harare hospital for further medical attention.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged motorists to adhere to road rules and regulations, emphasising the importance of avoiding speeding.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to abide by the country’s road rules and regulations in-order to curb road accidents. Above all, motorists are implored to avoid speeding on the country’s roads,” Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement.
He further promised to release more details in due course.
