Norton Member of Parliament Richard Tsvangirai was involved in a car accident on Monday evening on the Old Mazowe road area while returning from the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden.
He escaped the incident without sustaining any injuries. Tsvangirai confirmed the development to Nehanda Radio on Tuesday morning.
“Good morning, it is true that I had an accident on Old Mazowe road on my way home from Parliament. Only God knows how and why I survived a near-fatal accident. We thank God for his protection and grace,” he said.
He was driving a new Toyota Fortuner vehicle without number plates.
Richard Tsvangirai, son of the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, is the current Member of Parliament for Norton Constituency, representing the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party since the 2023 election.
Zimbabwe’s alarming accident rate is largely attributed to the deplorable state of its roads, which poses significant safety risks to drivers and contributes substantially to the country’s high accident toll.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), last year, recorded 2 099 deaths and 9 955 injuries from 51 994 accidents recorded across the country.
Most road accidents occurred during public holidays with the statistics, accident-related deaths involving victims aged between 25 and 45.
While human error is mostly attributed to frequent accidents in Zimbabwe, the poor road infrastructure has undeniably contributed significantly.
