The world football governing body, FIFA has instructed champions Ngezi Platinum Stars to pay their former coach Bongani Mafu a whooping sum of US$196 750 for unfair dismissal.

Mafu was ‘unfairly dismissed’ in 2022 when he was assistant to the former Warriors skipper Benjani Mwaruwari who also faced the axe at the same time after a few weeks in charge.

Following the situation, Mafu, formerly with Highlanders and Hwange took the matter to FIFA who on 27 August 2024 ordered Ngezi to compensate him.

“Ngezi Platinum Stars FC must pay to the claimant (Bongani Mafu) US$196 750 as compensation for breach of contract without just cause.

“The decision was passed on the 27th of August 2024 by the Fifa football tribunal’s player status chamber. The decision was communicated to Ngezi Platinum Stars Football Club, Bongani Mafu, Zifa, and Caf on the 30th of August 2024,” reads the FIFA letter.

The Mhondoro based side was given up to the 10th of September to appeal.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) chief executive officer, Yvonne Mapika Manwa, was holding the same position when Mafu and Mwaruwari were both shown the exit door after three months.

As it stands, Manwa who took over as the ZIFA boss in October last year, has fired more than half of the staff she found at the association, with some considering taking the matter to court.

She is currently on the verge of sacking Liberty ‘Libertino’ Mugari, the association’s communications leader who has in the meantime been stripped of his duties while still coming to work.
