NYANGA – A 30-year-old Nyanga man has been convicted and sentenced for physically assaulting his mother, accusing her of being involved in his wife’s alleged extra-marital affairs.
The Nyanga Magistrate’s Court heard that the accused, whose name has not been released, attacked his mother on June 23, 2024, after accusing her of involvement in his wife’s alleged extra-marital affairs.
The complainant had intervened to rescue her daughter-in-law, who was being assaulted by the accused, when he turned on her, hitting her with clenched fists on the head.
The complainant managed to escape further assault by fleeing the scene and reporting the incident to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest.
The court found the accused guilty of contravening the Domestic Violence Act and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has urged members of the public to resolve their disputes amicably or seek third-party mediation, rather than resorting to violence.
In another case, a 44-year-old teacher from Nyanga has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for physically abusing his wife.
The Nyanga Magistrates’ Court heard that the accused, who was not named again in order to protect the identity of the victim, attacked his wife after a male teacher visited their home, sparking an argument.
The altercation escalated, with the accused hitting his wife three times on the face, grabbing her by the neck, and knocking her to the ground.
The victim reported the incident to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest and subsequent conviction under the Domestic Violence Act.
The court sentenced the accused to 15 months in prison, with six months suspended for five years. A further nine months was suspended on condition that he performs 315 hours of community service.
