HARARE – The Zimbabwean media fraternity is mourning the death of veteran sports journalist Simba Rushwaya, who passed away at the age of 49 from colon cancer at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

Trained in mass communication at Harare Polytechnic in the late 1990s, Rushwaya worked for The Herald, Alpha Media Holdings, Daily News, Manica Post, and other media outlets.

He comes from Birchenough Bridge in Manicaland province.

At the time of his demise, Rushwaya was writing the “Eastern Sports Echoes” column for the Manica Post.

Media practitioners across the country paid their tributes to Rushwaya for the service he rendered during his time.

Prominent investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono said, “I am saddened to hear that veteran Zimbabwean journalist Simba Rushwaya has died of cancer. May his soul rest in peace.”

Stanley Gama, former Daily News editor, said Rushwaya will be missed.

“My good friend Simba Rushwaya is no more. Succumbed to cancer. What a devastating loss. My guy, you tried to fight this evil disease. You are a fighter. You will be sadly missed. Go well brother,” he said.

John Mokwetsi, a former NewsDay journalist said, “Simba Rushwaya. I am too shocked mukoma. We spoke last night for a proper (not so proper goodbye) because you knew it was time. ‘The worst might happen,’ you said.

“But now is not the time to tell your story because I know it from life to the grave. Rest in peace.”

Another prominent journalist Moses Matenga mourned the death of a “good fella”.

“When NewsDay-Zimbabwe started, Simba Rushwaya was made Senior Reporter, a development that made many who knew him frown because he was much more than that.

“He however, worked hard and in no time, he was justifiably made Group Sports Editor and had a dramatic stint at the highest level.

“He led a team with the late Wellington Toni as Editor and great sports mind in Henry Mhara and Daniel Nhakaniso as his trusted Lieutenants,” Matenga said.

“A good fella is gone. Rush, as Rushwaya was often referred to, also had a stint with the first Daily News, AB Communications where he wrote for Business Times.
