The Karoi Magistrates Court has jailed for 12 years, a 38-year-old man who connived with an accomplice to rob a taxi driver of his vehicle.
In a post on X, the National Prosecuting Authority said on October 7 last year Arnold Gunguwo and his accomplice identified only as Shepherd, hatched a plan to rob the complainant of the vehicle that he was using.
Shepherd, who ran away when the duo was cornered by local villagers and remains a fugitive from justice, then hired the complainant to ferry him from Karoi to Chinhoyi for US$20, picking up Gunguwo along the way.
On reaching the 175km peg, Harare- Chirundu highway, Shepherd requested a recess to relieve himself and went into the bush. When he returned, he teamed up with Gunguwo and attacked the complainant, threatening him with a Star Pistol.
Gunguwo and Shepherd ordered the complainant into the vehicle’s front passenger’s seat before driving off towards Chinhoyi. The complainant then jumped out of the moving vehicle as Gunguwo and Shepherd sped away.
The complainant sought assistance from a well-wisher and called the owner of the vehicle who mobilized other villagers and came in his lorry to look for Gunguwo and Shepherd.
They tracked Gunguwo and Shepherd and caught up with them at Chikuti Business Centre and when they saw that they had been identified the duo sped off in the stolen motor vehicle.
The complainant and his posse gave chase and only caught up with them when the motor vehicle developed a mechanical fault. Shepherd managed to escape whilst the accused person was apprehended by the villagers. New Ziana
