South African actor Innocent Masuku, better known for his role as Bobo in Yizo Yizo has hit hard times, as acting gigs dry up, leaving him unable to provide for his family.
While he was one of the breakout stars on Yizo Yizo, Masuku has struggled to get screen time in the last few years, largely due to his well publicised battle against drug addiction.
In an interview with Zimoja, Masuku said the lack of job opportunities was now even affecting his family, as he could not provide for his loved ones.
“I want to be honest and say that being unemployed had hit me hard and my family as well. It has affected my mental health too, I’ve dealt with depression because of this.
“More than just wanting to get back into acting, I just want to be able to provide for my myself and family”,” he said.
While he bemoaned a lack of support from his peers in the industry, Masuku acknowledged that his abuse of drugs had contributed to his downfall.
“Let’s also be honest about my use of drugs, I’d say that is probably one of the things that has held my career back, but I sought help and I’m now able function. I fought the addiction by going to rehab otherwise they would have killed me,” he said.
However, Masuku said he was now ready to take more roles as he had kicked his drug habit.
“I’ve even registered with an agent just to prove how serious I am about getting my career back,” he said.
Masuku said his talent was now seemingly being brushed away by producers who did not fancy his acting skills.
“Obviously in my industry we attend auditions to get work, but I haven’t been lucky even with the ones that I have attended.
“They are simply hard to come by and maybe I’m not what they are looking for anymore and I understand that the industry has changed, but I haven’t lost my acting gift. I can still act,” said Masuku. Telly Africa
