Angry outbursts by Kwaito veteran L’vovo Derrango have become a worrying concern for musicians in his native Durban, with fellow artists expressing frustration that the South African musician was increasingly becoming volatile.
Derango has recently returned to the stage after suffering a stroke in December 2022.
However, while many welcomed his return, Derrango has reportedly become abusive of other musicians, with musicians that spoke to Zimoja pointing to frustration as a possible source of the musician’s latest behaviour.
“We don’t know what got into grootman to be telling us he is the only one who paved the way for us,” said one artist who did not want to be identified.
It’s been suggested that L’vovo’s conduct is driven by his frustration as he has not fully recovered, which has led to tensions within the music industry in Durban.
“There is a better way of addressing his concerns or issues than lashing out at people,” one source said.
A promoter who also spoke anonymously encouraged the musician to undergo a process of emotional healing.
“We understand it’s frustrating that he has not fully recovered but how are we going to help him if he is angry?” the promoter asked.
The promoter added that he needs to focus on healing emotionally too. “He still has a long way – maybe he should also focus on healing emotionally if that is the case,” said the promoter.
Commenting on the allegations, Derrango blasted his critics, saying they could not take away what he had done for music in Durban.
“No one can just come here and try and change the history- Zakes and I changed the game of Durban kwaito music. Period,” he said. Telly Africa
