Shock as Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs (24) shot dead in car hijacking

The South African football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs who was shot dead in a car hijacking on Wednesday.

The Soweto giants took to their social media platforms to confirm the death.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Chiefs revealed the South African Police Service (SAPS) is “handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course”.

Reports suggest the 24-year-old who joined Chiefs from SuperSport United at the start of the season, was killed in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida.

It is alleged the incident took place at a petrol station when Fleurs was waiting to be attended to, before being approached by the armed robbers who demanded he come out of his car.

The unknown gunmen reportedly shot him once on the upper body.

This was before one of the suspects fled the scene with the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy’s graduate vehicle.

Gauteng Province police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed:

“The suspects pointed [at] him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body.”

The South African football family has joined hands together to pour tributes to Fleurs’ family and friends following the shocking and tragedy incident.
