DARWENDALE – A woman from West Coast Farm in Darwendale who wanted to cover up a lie about her pregnancy and dumped a newly born baby in a cattle dip tank has appeared in court.
Irene Chisora (30) appeared before Chinhoyi Provincial Magistrate, Samantha Chigwedere, charged with concealing a baby, as defined in section 106 of the Criminal Law, Codification and Reform Act:9.23.
Chisora was sentenced to six months imprisonment but three months were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. Chisora will therefore serve an effective three months or perform 105 hours of community service.
Prosecutor Irene Mapfumo told the court that on February 27, 2024 Chisora found a concealed place under a tree along West Coast Farm – New Grade Farm road and gave birth to a baby boy.
The court heard that Chisora then took the newly born child and threw him in a cattle dip tank, because she had lied to her husband that she was only three months pregnant.
Chisora is a mother of two daughters, was already nine months pregnant when she experienced labour pains along the way in the area around the dip tank.
After dumping the baby boy, Chisora positioned herself at the side path of the road and informed her husband and friend about having had a miscarriage.
However, on March 3, 2024, a boy from West Coat Farm, was driving cattle when he saw the child’s body floating in the cattle dip tank. He informed the village head who filed the report at Darwendale police station.
The body of the baby was retrieved from the dip tank and taken to Father O Hea Hospital awaiting a post-mortem.
