Benni McCarthy praised for transforming Marcus Rashford into ‘goalscoring machine’
Former Bafana Bafana and West Ham striker Benni McCarthy has been hailed by Premier League side Manchester United’s supporters, for transforming Marcus Rashford into a ‘goal scoring machine’ and a clinical finisher.
McCarthy was appointed in July 2022 as first team coach for United’s forwards and is part of gaffer Erik Ten Hag’s backroom staff.
His role is to coach the attacking players and also to help them improve their positioning.
Following his appointment, Marcus Rashford has incredibly transformed and United fans believe the South African international coach is the secret weapon behind that resurgence.
Rashford ended last season with five goals only while this time he has scored 24-goals in all competitions, something that United fans have credited McCarthy for.
United supporters could be heard glorifying him [McCarthy] by chanting his name at Old Trafford when the Red Devils beat Leicester City 3-0 last Sunday.
Rashford and Sancho found the back of the net with the former scoring a brace while the latter sealed the victory for the high flying United which is seated third on the log table.
After the thrilling match, fans can be seen on a social media video queuing outside Old Trafford to get McCarthy’s autograph.
They urged him to continue with the good work he has done on Rashford and in response the 45-year-old ex-FC Porto strike can be heard in the video promising them saying: “I got him [Rashford] at the place”.
Apart from United fans, McCarthy has been hailed by the club’s current and former players and former premier league players including England international Ian Wright.
Speaking on working with McCarthy, in November last year, Rashford said:
“He’s definitely helped me a lot. To have them attack-minded coaches is good for us in the squad, he’s always there speaking to us about these things.”
Meanwhile, Erik Ten Hag has also publicly praised McCarthy and told the media about his impact in his technical team.
