Speaking to reporters at the White House, the US president said he had “great respect” for Germany.

He added: “My father is German right – was German – born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany.”

It is not the first time the US president has made the claim.

In July 2018, talking to CBS News about the EU, he said: “Don’t forget both my parents were born in EU sectors okay? I mean my mother was Scotland, my father was Germany.”

Mr Trump’s grandparents on his father’s side was indeed born in Germany before moving to the US, but Fred Trump was born in New York City.

US website The Smoking Gun last year published a photo it said was of Fred Trump’s birth certificate, which lists his place of birth as 539 East 177 Street, on 11 October 1905.

The latest gaffe came after the president met with NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg and said NATO member states had improved in bearing a greater share of defence costs. However, he said he hoped to see them contribute more in the future.
