Tuku and Winky D to release new albums

Musical legend Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi is set to unveil a new album Ehe Kani Nhai Yahweh on September 22 at his multi-million dollar Pakare Paye Arts Centre, in Norton.

Media reports say that Mtukudzi’s manager Sam Mataure confirmed the development set to take place at the Arts centre that is situated 40kilometres from Harare.

“The September 22 event will be for the invited guests while a mega concert will be held at Borrowdale Country Manor, in Harare on September 30 and this will be the platform where the public will witness Tuku performing the album,” Mataure only said.

With over 60 albums since he began his musical journey in 1977, Tuku has established his influence not only in the country but on the entire globe at large.

The star began performing in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured another musical superstar, Thomas Mapfumo. Their single Dzandimomotera went gold and Tuku’s first album followed, which was also a major success. Tuku last released his 63rd album, Mukombe WeMvura in 2014.

Tuku has collaborated with various artistes’ in and out of Zimbabwe and has received a number of accolades in his career, including being the Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for the southern Africa region.

Meanwhile one of Zimbabwe’s top Zimdancehall artistes’, Ninja President also known as Winky D is also planning on releasing new music before year-end as he puts final touches to his 2016 studio album.

Last year, Winky D’s song Disappear off the project Kickstape (Gafa Life), released end of 2015, was awarded the song of the year gong ahead of people’s favourite tracks from Killer T’s Takumbofarawo album which had ruled the roost for the better part of the year.

Disappear made it on BBC Radio 1Extra Destination Africa Top 5, and this time around, the artiste is planning to drop another studio project during the same period.

At the recently held Mafikizolo concert at Belgravia Sports Club, Winky D sampled two of the tracks; 25 and Babie RaMwari to the delight of fans.

“We are summer guys, summer time is gafa time. Fans should expect the project before December,” Winky D’s manager Jonathan Banda recently said in media reports.

“The project is different from Gafa Life in many aspects, there is a different mood altogether.”

The forthcoming project has several producers, including multi-award winning artist Oskid and Banda said they will have worked with different music producers but Oskid will have a final touch on the project.

Winky D’s albums include The People’s Devotee, Chatsva, Cum 2 Tek Ova, Igofigo and Vanhu Vakuru amongst others. He is also amongst  the pioneers of dancehall music in the country and since the launch of his musical career, he has performed in most continents and has won a number of musical awards.

Some of his awards include Zim Dancehall Awards; Best Song gong with track Rokesheni; Best Social Message (Mafirakureva); and Best Artiste 2013 (male) among others. He won the National Arts Merit Awards with album Igofigo and People’s Choice award in 2010 while Disappear earned him the Song of the Year gong in 2015.

The Ninja President, as Winky D is affectionately known by his fans, has shared the stage with international musicians such as P-Square, Capleton and Beenie Man amongst others.
