The 16-day protest was launched on June 1 and brings together young youths from different persuasions, among them students and civil society.

The Zimbabwe Activist Alliance kicked off the protest where disgruntled young men and women are sleeping over in the famous square demanding an arrest of the economic crisis the country is going through and promotion of Zimbabweans welfare and respect of human rights.

The protesters are accusing the government of oppression and are pressing for jobs in a country where there is an estimated 90 percent unemployment.

Lumumba, the former Harare province secretary for tourism in Zanu (PF) and a parliamentary aspirant in the 2013 elections, left the ruling party last month.

He complained that government had lost touch with reality and suggested that youths form a political party.

He joins another former Zanu (PF) heavyweight, Temba Mliswa, the former provincial chairperson for Mashonaland West, who has formed a youth movement after being kicked out of the party.

“In two years young people will change this country. We are going to go to an election and turn the page,” Lumumba declared.

The protest has ruffled Mugabe’s government which is hanging on a thread due to its incapacity to turn around the country’s fortunes. Nehanda Radio
