Zimbabwe’s troubled national carrier announced Sunday that it plans to resume flights to London, nearly four years after it stopped flying to the United Kingdom following a brush with creditors.

Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive Edmund Makona told state television that the airline has made significant ground on negotiations with “London stakeholders” for the resumption of flights.

“Our current business strategy is anchored on the need to return to profitability and route network expansion,” Makona told ZBC.

The state-owned Zimbabwean airline stopped flying to London in mid-2012 after creditors threatened to seize its planes over debts.

It also cancelled flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, at the same and for the same reasons.

However, Harare to Johannesburg flights resumed in 2014 after the airline cleared its debts with some South African creditors.

Of the current routes, the Harare-Johannesburg route is the most lucrative.

The demand for the Harare-London route has however always proved greater and would easily be the most profitable route again.
