Arsenal secured their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League as Olivier Giroud’s hat-trick earned them a hugely impressive 3-0 victory at Olympiacos.

Arsene Wenger’s side came into Wednesday’s clash in Greece knowing a victory by any scoreline other than 1-0 or 2-1 would see them leapfrog their opponents and claim second spot in Group F.

Having lost the reverse fixture in September 3-2, the odds appeared to be against the visitors but Arsenal – who had tasted defeat in three of their first four group games to leave their hopes hanging in the balance – showed admirable steel and a clinical edge to avoid being eliminated from the opening group stage of the competition for the first time since 1999-2000.

After Mathieu Flamini struck the crossbar, Giroud opened the scoring with a near-post header shortly before the half-hour mark.

And the Frenchman doubled his tally with the crucial second goal early in the second half, getting on the end of Joel Campbell’s excellent pass to slot home.

Midway through the second period, Omar Elabdellaoui was perhaps harshly penalised for handling Nacho Monreal’s shot, and Giroud coolly converted the spot-kick for his first Arsenal hat-trick that sends Wenger’s men through as runners-up behind Bayern Munich.

Roared on by the vociferous home support, Olympiacos had made the brighter start and the first serious effort on goal arrived in the 20th minute when Seba fired narrowly off target from the edge of the box.

Arsenal burst into life five minutes later, though, and went agonisingly close to going in front.

Former Olympiacos loanee Campbell got free down the right and his cutback found Flamini, whose effort took a slight deflection off Manuel da Costa and struck the bar.

Arsenal did not have long to rue their ill-fortune, however, as in the 29th minute Aaron Ramseycrossed from the left for Giroud and the Frenchman’s header crept under Roberto into the bottom-left corner.

Olympiacos’ response was strong and Laurent Koscielny had to be alert to divert Felipe Pardo’s dangerous cross away from the lurking Brown Ideye.

There was concern for Arsenal at the start of the second period when Giroud fell awkwardly on his right ankle, but he soon recovered to make another telling contribution.

Campbell was the provider, showing composure inside the box to take four Olympiacos defenders out of the game with a cute pass which allowed Giroud to sidefoot home.

Arsenal then went in search of a third as Theo Walcott – in his first start since October – volleyed narrowly wide.

At 2-0 down Olympiacos knew one goal would see them advance at Arsenal’s expense, andKostas Fortounis stung the palms of Petr Cechbefore Per Mertesacker’s superb block denied Ideye.

Just when it seemed the hosts were regaining a foothold in the game, Elabdellaoui threw himself at Monreal’s effort, which cannoned into his arm.

Referee Nicola Rizzoli pointed to the spot and Giroud made no mistake, sending Roberto the wrong way from 12 yards.

That left Olympiacos needing three goals to progress – a task that proved well beyond Marco Silva’s side, who must now console themselves with a place in the Europa League, while Arsenal are left to eagerly await Monday’s draw for the last 16. Yahoo Sport

Luke-ing the Beast in the Eye: A dozen life take-homes from Arsenal’s spirited...

By Luke Batsirai Tamborinyoka It is unfortunate that history only remembers the best. Indeed, history is stubborn and spares no time for second best. But if the truth be told, and notwithstanding their reputation as the nearly men of English soccer, Arsenal continue to display the best and most exciting brand of football ever seen in this generation. They may have lost out on yesterday’s crown, but there is no denying that the most fascinating brand of football this season in the English Premiership was exhibited by my favourite team, Arsenal Football club. Moneybags Manchester City, bankrolled by Abu Dhabi billionaires, may have unfairly elbowed out Arsenal to the title yesterday. I may be biased because I am an Arsenal fan but I will posit that just like Zanu PF, Manchester City have their own baggage regarding the legitimacy of this title and others in the last few years. They have an albatross of 115 charges hanging over them and the legitimacy of their crown will always be contested and disputed until those outstanding legitimacy issues are comprehensively dealt with. Manchester City, the moneybags from the Etihad, the Wicknell Chivayo of the English Premiership, have used the power of their purse to bully the football world by literally buying football talent around the globe, in the process flouting financial fair play rules. The 115 charges will always remain a legitimacy blot and asterisk; painfully so in the two seasons where the accused and their pending charges have robbed Arsenal of the title. Put simply, there are 115 reasons why City’s title triumph is a blemish on the integrity of football as a popular global sport. So too was the integrity of football as a sport and the chastity of fair competition seriously harmed by the behaviour of Tottenham, whose fans joyously sang for their team’s defeat to Manchester City. The shameful sight of Spurs fans celebrating their team’s defeat while raucously chanting: “ I know and I am sure I am City till July ” left a sour taste in the mouth of all football lovers across the globe. The miscreant behaviour of Tottenham fans eroded and corroded all the lustre, glory and honour from the world’s most beautiful game. The gothic message from the celebration of their own defeat just to spite their neighbour was that they hate Arsenal more than they love their own team. It was much like celebrating the rape of your own mother, which rape you seem to have purposely arranged just to tarnish and soil the impeccable record of an anti-rape crusade in the community that is being spearheaded by your neighbour. Dear reader, notwithstanding the fact that they lost out on the title yesterday, this piece is about the several life lessons that can be drawn from the Gunners’ spirited campaign this season.
