LONDON – English Premier League (EPL) side Arsenal have agreed to pay €63.5m (£55m) up front for Viktor Gyokeres.

The Gunners are close to finalising a full agreement with Sporting CP for the Swedish striker.

Reports suggest discussions are ongoing over performance related add-ons that could raise the total package to around €80m.

It is believed Arsenal proposed an additional €15m in bonuses for the 27-year-old.

Gyokeres who missed Saturday’s deadline to report for pre-season training, is facing disciplinary action from Sporting.

However, both clubs remain confident the deal will be completed in the coming days.

Tensions between Gyokeres and Sporting have intensified in recent weeks amid the player’s strong desire to join Arsenal.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas remains firm on the club’s valuation, reiterating that Gyokeres will be fined unless he provides a valid excuse for his absence, such as medical issues, authorised leave or a family emergency.

“We are calm,” Varandas said on Saturday. “Everything can be resolved with the close of the transfer window, a heavy fine and an apology to the group.

“If [Arsenal] don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we are very comfortable with that for the next three years.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are expected to return with an improved bid for Valencia defender Christian Mosquera after their initial £14m offer was rejected.

The Spain U21 international has already agreed personal terms with the Gunners.
