MDC youth leaders, James Chidhakwa, Rhino Mashaya and Keith Charumbira were this afternoon brutally assaulted by Zanu PF thugs on their way from Harare provincial chairperson, Eric Murayi’s trial in Mbare.
The three sustained grave injuries, with Mashaya losing four teeth and a fractured rib, while Chidhakwa and Charumbira sustained deep head cuts.
The three have been admitted at a Harare hospital.
On Sunday police detained Murai and 16 opposition supporters after authorities broke up a political rally using tear gas. MDC party spokesman Obert Gutu said police arrested the group as supporters gathered for a rally that the police ordered cancelled at short notice.
Gutu said police beat up opposition supporters, fired teargas at people heading to the venue on the outskirts of Harare and randomly arrested party activists. “We are deeply disturbed and appalled by the arrest of Honourable Eric Murai and 16 supporters,” he said.
