HARARE – A senior citizen took his estranged “girlfriend” to court on accusations of vanishing with his household property whilst he was at a funeral wake.
William Vambe, 78, took his lover, Rosemary Maiya, 62, to the Harare magistrate’s court on theft charges.
The two reside in Chinamhora.
Maiya claimed in court that she had an intimate relationship with Vambe.
The 62 year old denied the charges when she appeared before magistrate Victoria Mashamba.
She told the court that Vambe brewed the allegations after she failed to fulfil her lover’s expectations during their relationship.
“I did not take any of his property. This man was my lover and he was expecting some children out of our relationship.
“He is doing this (accusing her of stealing) since we failed to sire any children as he was expecting,” she said.
Magistrate Mashamba cleared her of the charges saying the State had failed to prove a case beyond reasonable doubt.
The State, led by Netsai Mashayabasa, heard that on February 9, Vambe left his place of residence to attend a funeral wake.
It was said whilst he was at the funeral wake, his friend approached him saying that Maiya had taken some of his household property.
Vambe reportedly rushed home to discover that his “lover” had taken some of his household property worth US$1 794.50.
He then took the matter to the police leading to her arrest.
But she was acquitted after the State failed to prove a case against her. H Metro
