Over 200 job seekers lose money

HARARE – Nearly 200 people lost their money and valuable time on Saturday following a hoax Whatsapp message circulating via smart phones asking people to visit KFC offices in Eastlea for employment.

It seems some con artists discovered that KFC were opening a new branch at Joina City in the CBD and decided to cash in on the desperate job seekers.

The official process was completed some time ago and the recruited staff is ready for the official opening.

Kombi and taxi drivers cashed in as desperate job seekers rushed to be by the gate on time only to be turned away by the officials.

The officials however, later asked the job seekers to drop their curriculum vitas in a basket provided outside the gate.

Among the job seekers were women nursing their babies as they waited patiently anticipating a change of mind from the FFC officials.

The fake message promised the successful workers a basic pay that included meals for the cook, cashiers and packers.

Interested persons were expected to be at the offices by 7am since gates were to be closed after thirty minutes.

“Tapinda tapinda nhasi vanhu vachimhanyira basa risipo vachida kubata nguva,” one of the drivers was heard saying.

Disappointed job seekers were later seen along Samora Machel Avenue, walking back into the city after learning that they fell for a hoax.

“I was here by 5am since the message stated that the gates were to be closed thirty minutes after the given time. I had to hire a taxi to be on time,” said one of the female job seekers.

An official at KFC said the due process had already been completed.

“We have limited jobs. We responded to those who applied some time back and only those who received messages from us are the ones we want to attend to,” one of the officials said addressing people outside the gate.

“All those with messages sent by their friends or relatives must leave this place since we have no vacancies for them, you may drop your CVs in that basket if you want to apply for other jobs that may be available,” he added. H Metro
