MDC re-unification process collapses
HARARE – Attempts to unite the splinter MDC Renewal Team and the MDC led by Welshman Ncube have collapsed.
In a statement seen by Nehanda Radio, Joshua Mhambi, the spokesman for the MDC (Ncube) said they had been informed by their colleagues in the Renewal Team that they had “suspended their participation in the reunification processes and roadmap” which was signed on the 26th of November 2014.
The MDC Renewal Team has “elected instead to go to their own Congress to resolve their leadership questions. The MDC accepts and fully respects their decision and wishes them well in their programs. The MDC will remain focused on its priority programs on party building and mobilization,” Mhambi said.
The MDC (Ncube) said it “remains fully committed to the reunification of the two MDC formations and to the building of a broader coalition of democrats to collectively address the challenges which confront our country.”
In 2005 Ncube and other senior officials broke away from the main MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai. This was after a disagreement over whether to participate in senate elections. Last year the Secretary General who succeeded Ncube, Tendai Biti, also broke away with other officials, claiming that Tsvangirai was a dictator.
