United Kingdom (UK) based Portia Gwanzura’s son Roby Gee (real name Robert Gwanzura) has released an album titled Moyondizvo. Roby Gee said Moyondizvo is a mixture of his totem and musical content.

“I looked at it from a Zimbabwean point of view; home sick and deprived of rich Zimbabwean music,” he said.

“I then targeted the Zimbabwean audience both young and old because I felt the gap had to be bridged by a language called ‘love of the music’,” said Roby Gee.

The nine-track album carries songs such as Kabhengi Ndakasunga featuring fellow Zimbabwean Jusa Dementor. He said the album fuses Zimbabwean roots style, culture and singing, with the new age urban instrumentals that are of dominant proportions in this era.

Roby Gee recorded and mixed all the songs on the album while mastering was done by Christopher Mandivenga, aka Unkle Krizz of Blackstones.

Instrumental productions were done by Galaxy Beats of Moyondizvo Entertainment in South Africa, Jusa Dementor of Abra in England and Sean Focus of Imvaize in Scotland.

Roby Gee said his inspiration came mostly from his mother who once led the group Hohodza in Zimbabwe before she moved to the United Kingdom. This allowed him to get closer to musicians such as veteran Thomas Mapfumo, System Tazvida, Andy Brown and Penny Penny.

“I always knew that I was going to be an artist or producer,” said the young artist.

“It was only when I invested a little cash and put together my own personal recording studio in my house that meant whenever I had an idea I had the opportunity to put it to disc straight away while the vibe was still buzzing,” he said.

Roby Gee is currently learning to play the bass guitar while he can already play the piano and keyboards. Zimbabwe Standard
