HARARE – Former Zimbabwean commonwealth flyweight boxing champion Alfonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika is back in action training youths in Harare’s Mbare suburb.
Zvenyika has launched the Mosquito Boxing Gym and is so far training over 15 youths, mostly street kids for free. There are many promising fighters in his gym like Anywhere Katunga who will be fighting this month in Namibia.
Equipment for the gym though remains a big problem. With only a pair of gloves and pads Zvenyika needs sponsorship. Zvenyika is also having to buy food for the under-privileged kids who are coming to him for training.
Over the years Zimbabwean boxing has taken a huge slump mainly because of no sponsorship. The Mosquito Boxing Gym is hoping to buck the trend and produce champions who will fly the Zimbabwean flag, the same way Zvenyika did.
