SHURUGWI – A Toyota Granvia carrying passengers from Zvishavane veered off the road along the Gweru-Shurugwi road near Chikwingwizha Seminary Bus Stop as it was trying to overtake in front of an oncoming South Africa bound haulage truck on Saturday.

No death occurred but there were serious injuries including head wounds and bleeding. The driver also was not seriously injured and tried to down play the fact that he was wrong by overtaking in front of oncoming traffic by saying the vehicle burst its tire though all tires were intact.
Another serious injury involved a handcapped lady who was restless and bleeding profusely from the nose after being thrown from the doomed vehicle. All the injured were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital by well-wishers.
The vehicle which was damaged beyond repair is said to be owned by a police officer at Zvishavane Police Station. Of late there has been a surge in cases of private vehicles mostly owned by police officers plying major highways carrying passengers and the arm of law seems too short to deal with them.
