In a sad love story, a woman in Domboshava fatally axed her husband and then took her own life after her husband had gone to stay with his mistress at Hopely Farm.
The incident occurred in the wee hours of Friday morning when Jessman Nyakudya took advantage of her drunk husband Daniel Murira (37) and struck him with an axe thrice on his head. He died on the spot.
After committing this gory act, Jessman went on to down a bottle of poison and died soon after she was arrested. Police confirmed the development.
Officer Commanding Murewa District Chief Superintendent Simon Mwatsikesimbe told H-Metro that investigations are underway.
“Yes the woman killed her husband and consumed 200 millilitres termic poison after committing the offence. Jessman downed the poison on discovering that police were looking for her. She was arrested as she finished the last drop of the poison,” he said.
According to neighbours, Daniel fled from their matrimonial home in Domboshava and ‘eloped’ to a small house whose name could not be ascertained. This did not go down well with Jessman who couldn’t afford to lose her man of 22years.
On the fateful day, Daniel who was now alternating between his small house and Jessman, came home. He was drunk after downing one too many beers at a funeral in the area. He sneaked into the blankets and slept, Jessman could not stomach ‘sleeping with the enemy’ and she struck him in his sleep.
Narrated neighbours:
“”She (Jessman) had always threatened her husband when this other woman came into the picture. She was against the idea since Daniel was now spending more time at the girlfriend’s house in Hopely so on Friday she fulfilled her threats.”
H-Metro visited Domboshava and caught up with the late Daniel’s uncle who identified himself as Matthew Murira (70). He said:
“They always quarrelled over this woman and she had always been promising to kill him over and over again on the issue.
“Aingoti ndichakutema nedemo, ndichakuuraya hangu. He was no longer staying at the house with his first wife because he was spending much of his time at the ‘small house’, hopely Farm in Waterfalls. He came from Harare on this day where he was staying with the mistress”
“Mukadzi wake pakamuuraya akabva afonera hama achiti auye kuzoona zvaainga aita murume”
She added that she then rushed to Show ground shopping centre and downed poison. She succumbed to the poison soon after police had picked her and she was pronounced dead at Makumbi Mission Hospital.
The uncle said Daniel had not yet paid lobola to the mistress but he had formally introduced her to him since he is the remaining elder in the family.
“He told me about this new wife but I had advised him not to go ahead since it would bring some problems in the family. He insisted citing that his wife could no longer conceive more children. So he said he could not die with one child.”
The couple is survived by one 18 year old child. Burial arrangements are still underway but it is believed Jessman will be buried First since in their tradition someone who commits suicide will not ’lie in state’ in the house. H Metro
