The two who reside in Cranborne surburb are also being charged under the Burial and Cremation Act for dumping a foetus. They allegedly refused to be medically examined after their arrest, the court heard.

The two were Thursday released on $100 bail by Harare magistrate, Olivia Mariga. The state alleges that on September 15 this year the couple went to a bushy area in Msasa’s industrial area where they terminated her pregnancy after which they burnt the foetus in a rubbish bin.

Upon seeing rubbish burning at the bushy area, passersby’s went to investigate and saw the two burning the rubbish were they discovered a foetus after which a report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the two. They are expected to re-appear before the court on November 8.

Abortion is a crime in Zimbabwe unless a court rules in favour of it or in a case where an expecting mother can die because of the pregnancy or in cases of when a woman is impregnated through rape. Radio VOP
