Tsvangirai speaks out on marriage to Elizabeth

By Staff Reporter

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has justified his flirtation with several women before marrying Elizabeth Macheka saying love was like a “human spirit which hovers over many individuals before it finally settles on its chosen medium”.

The MDC-T leader was addressing guests at his wedding reception in Harare on Saturday. Tsvangirai married Macheka under customary law (which allows polygamy) thereby thwarting attempts by his bitter former lover Locardia Karimatsenga who succeeded in getting a court injunction taking away his marriage licence.

“Love is like a spirit medium, it won’t just go and say I am here. It checks on how a person’s heart is, goes to the other and checks if the heart is strong until it settles,” Tsvangirai told the guests who included swimmer Kirsty Coventry, tennis ace Wayne Black and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara.

“In September 2008 in this country we signed the GPA. Some called it a forced marriage claiming it wouldn’t last for six months. That GPA gave rise to the unity government and has lasted three-and-a-half years.

“Today September 15, we are signing a covenant between me and my wife Elizabeth. They have been many skeptics and naysayers that this will not last,” said Tsvangirai. The PM said he was not worried that Elizabeth’s father was from Zanu PF.

“My father-in-law is from another party, but when I saw Elizabeth I did not ask for her party card or her political affiliation. I just saw and appreciated her beauty and I said this is the one I love,” said the MDC-T leader.

Zambian labour minister Fackson Shamenda who was Tsvangirai’s best man at the wedding chipped in saying “if Elizabeth wants to know Morgan, she should call me or my wife. I have been married to my wife for 32 years and I have lived with my wife without any piece of paper.

“When I was reading of the malicious things, I told the Zambian ambassador that l was not tied to my wife by any piece of paper. What God has put together, no one can destroy,” he said. Shamenda was referring to the cancellation of Tsvangirai’s marriage licence by a Zanu PF dominated court system.
